Abstract:
Preparation of the compound (Ar'R4)O(Ar"R'4)M(CH2Ph)2 is performed by adding (Ar"R4)(Ar'R'4)OH to M(CH2Ph)4, where Ar' is phenyl or naphthyl, Ar" is cyclopentadienyl or indenyl, R and R' are independently H or C1-10 alkyl groups, M is a group 4 transition metal. The compound is activated toward polymerization of alpha olefins by any of the cocatalysts methylalumoxane, B(ArF)3, and Ph3C B(ArF)4 .
Abstract:
Methods for the preparation of new sulfated mesoporous zirconia materials/catalysts with crystalline pore walls of predominantly tetragonal crystal structure, characterized by nitrogen physisorption measurement, X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy and catalytic tests using n-butane isomerization to iso-butane and alkylation of 1-naphthol with 4-tert-butylstyrene as probe reactions. Sulfate deposition is preferred for the transformation of a mesoporous precursor with amorphous pore walls into a material with crystalline pore walls maintaining the mesoporous characteristics.
Abstract:
The synthesis of the organo-Lewis acid perfluorobiphenylborane (PBB) and the activation of metallocenes for the formation of a variety of highly active homogeneous Ziegler-Natta metallocene olefin polymerization, copolymerization and ring-opening polymerization catalysts is described.
Abstract:
One manner of construction of robust, thin film materials with large second-order optical nonlinearities is the covalent self-assembly of aligned arrays of high- beta molecular chromophores into multilayer superlattices. The dispersion of the large second harmonic generation (SHG) response in a self-assembled (SA) film containing stilbazolium chromophore building blocks is disclosed, as well as the fabrication of SHG waveguides with such materials. An example of the multilayer superlattices comprises optically non-linear self-assembled multilayers (10) formed on a substrate (15) and an optically linear polymer layer (20) formed on the non-linear layer (10).
Abstract:
A non-coordinating anion, preferably containing a sterically shielded diboron hydride, if combined with a cyclopenta-dienyl-substituted metallocene cation component, such as a zirconocene metallocene, is a useful olefin polymerization catalyst component. The anion preferably has formula (I) where R is branched lower alkyl, such as t-butyl.
Abstract:
This invention relates to genetically engineered eukaryotic organisms, such as yeast, that are made capable of detecting the expression of heterologous ion channels. These organisms include a potassium transport defective phenotype eukaryotic organism transformed with DNA that suppresses the potassium transport defective phenotype in the organism. A potassium transport gene is set out in Sequence Id. No. 1. This genetically engineered organism can be used to screen for new herbicides or drugs.
Abstract:
Polymer-based second harmonic generation materials are disclosed, including electric field poled, chromophore-functionalized polyphenylene ethers with second harmonic coefficients (d33) as high as 65 x 10-9 esu, Tg ≈ 173 °C, and with superior temporal stability of the poling-induced chromophore orientation. Procedures for simultaneously poling and diepoxide cross-linking chromophore-functionalized poly(ς-hydroxystyrene) are set forth, resulting in a significant improvement in the temporal stability of chromophore orientation. Chromophore immobilization is disclosed involving highly cross-linkable epoxy matrices. In a first procedure chromophore molecules are embedded in a matrix which can be simultaneously poled and thermally cured. In a second procedure, a functionalized high-β chromophore is synthesized for use as an epoxy matrix component.

Novel analogs of GABA and L-glutamic acid are used for treating seizure disorders. One analog, 4-amino-3-(2-methylpropyl) butanoic acid is found to have unexpectedly potent antiseizure activity in vivo.
Abstract:
A synthetic peptide producing antibodies of enhanced binding to the human C4 isozyme of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH-C4) is composed of amino acids corresponding to the 9 to 20 sequence of the human enzyme. The peptide can be used as the active component of an antifertility vaccine for women.
Abstract:
Hybridoma HB 8986 produces a murine monoclonal antibody which recognizes a new determinant expressed in bronchopulmonary carcinomas and A549 cell line derived tumors. Immunoperoxidase staining with the hybridoma on formalin fixed, paraffin embedded tissues shows that it specifically stains both the cytoplasmic and cell surface. The monoclonal antibody has the ability to distinguish preferably bronchopulmonary carcinomas with glandular differentiation from other bronchopulmonary carcinomas. Additionally, the monoclonal antibody may identify adenocarcinomas through the body.
