Abstract: A reactor for enzymatic degradation of biological sludge at elevated temperature, is new. A reactor (1) designed to treat biological sludge by enzymatic degradation, employs a physical agitation system (5, 6) to inject gas into the effluent and an independent regulator (8) to control oxygen input according to the specific needs of the biomass to ensure degradation of the residual organic materials. At the top of the reactor there is a probe (10) to measure the oxygen content, linked to the regulator (8), and a second probe (12) to measure gas pressure, connected to a recycling circuit (16). A heat exchange circuit (2, 3) ensures that effluent entering the reactor is heated after being initially thickened, and the effluent feed circuit incorporates an additional heat exchanger (17) fed by heating steam to be used during starting and booster phases.
