[Also in Division D1] The invention comprises dyes having the general formula. in which one X is -NH-Z, the other two are hydrogen in which Z is a group -ArNRR 1 in which Ar is an arylene radical, R and R 1 are alkyl (C 1 -C 4 ) groups or form together with the nitrogen atom a piperidine or morpholine ring or alternatively Z may be the group -(CH 2 ) n NRR 1 in which R and R 1 form part of the heterocyclic rings as above, n has the values 2-6. The invention also comprises the quaternary ammonium salts of the above, especially the methyl sulphate and benzyl chloride derivatives. The dyes are obtained by the reaction of a diamine of formula NH 2 -(CH 2 ) n -NRR 1 or NH 2 -Ar-NRR 1 with quinizarin, leuco quinizarin (followed by oxidation) or 1,5- or 1,8-dichloroanthraquinone followed if required by quaternization in the presence or absence of an organic solvent. Many examples of these dyes are given.

Abstract: 1,050,863. Anthraquinone dyestuffs. L'OREAL. Feb. 5, 1965 [Feb. 5, 1964], No. 5144/65. Heading C4P. [Also in Division D1] The invention comprises 1-hydroxy-2,4-di-(pdimethylaminophenylamino) anthraquinone and quaternary salts derived therefrom having the general formula wherein R 1 is a C 1 -C 4 alkyl radical and A- is an anion e.g. an iodide or methosulphate anion. The compound 1-hydroxy 2,4-di-(p-dimethylarninophenyl amino) anthraquinone is prepared by reacting N,N-dimethyl-p-phenylene diamine with 1,2,4-trihydroxyanthraquinone in presence of boric acid and this compound is converted to the quaternary salts by reacting with quaternizing agents e.g. methyl iodide or methyl sulphate. The quaternary salts may be used to dye keratinic fibres e.g. human hair alone or in admixture with other basic dyes.
