    Abstract: PURPOSE: To obtain the subject composition containing a 2,5- dihydroxyphenylcarboxylic acid derivative (parts of the compounds are new), its homolog or slat as an active ingredient, and capable of being topically administered for whitening skins or treating colored spots. CONSTITUTION: This cosmetic or dermatological composition, such as a lotion, cream or milky lotion, exhibiting a depigmenting action comprises a 2,5- dihydroxyphenylcarboxylic acid derivative of formula I R1 is OR5 (R5 is an alkyl, an alkenyl), a group of formula II [(r'), (r") are each H, an alkyl, a hydroxyalkyl, etc.; or (r') and (r") form a hererocyclic group together with N]; R2 , R3 are each H, an alkyl, an alkoxy; R4 is H, an alkyl; (n) is 0-20; wherein when R2 to R4 are each H, (n) is 2}, its homolog or salt. Especially a 2,5- dihydroxyphenylcarboxylic acid of formula III [R is OR', NHR" (R' is an alkyl; R" is an alkyl)], e.g. 2,5-dihydroxy-4-methylphenylacetic acid methyl ester, is new. The concentration of the compound of formula I is about 0.05-5wt.%.
