A magnesium salt of a copolymer obtainable by hydrolysis of a copolymer which consists of recurring units (A) of formula -C 2 H 2 (R)(R 1 )-, where R is a linear or branched C 8-26 hydrocarbon radical which may be substituted by hydroxyl groups or hetero atoms and/or contains chain hetero atoms, and R 1 is -H or -CH 3 , and units (B) of one or more of formula where R 1 is -H or -CH 3 , is claimed. The salt may be made by copolymerizing one or more anhydrides or acids of formula and one or more monomers of formula C 2 H 2 RR 1 , where R 1 , R and R 1 are as above, and either (a) reacting the copolymer with magnesium acetate or (b) hydrolysing the copolymer (if it is the anhydride) which is then converted to its alkali metal salt and reacted with magnesium chloride.

Heading A5B [Also in Divisions B1 and C3] A cosmetic composition contains a water in oil emulsion comprising as emulsifier a copolymer consisting of recurring units (A) of formula: -C 2 H 2 (R) (R 1 )- where R 1 is H or CH 3 and R is a linear or branched hydrocarbon radical which contains 8-26 carbon atoms and may be substituted by hydroxyl groups or hetero atoms and/or may contain chain hetero atoms, and units (B) of formula where R 1 is H or CH 3 . The emulsifier may also be a copolymer obtained by hydrolysis of the above copolymer or by copolymerising a monomer of formula C 2 H 2 RR 1 with an acid of one of formula where R, R 1 and R 1 are as above; or a magnesium salt of the hydrolysed copolymer. Examples A-K describe the preparation of creams (hand, foundation, fluid cuticle and night) and a cheek make-up consisting of the above emulsions together with pigment and perfume.

[Also in Divisions A5 and C4] Copolymers used in cosmetic hair preparations comprise an unsaturated ester from the group A with an unsaturated acid from the group B, or an unsaturated ester from the group A 1 with an unsaturated acid from the group B 1 , either copolymer optionally containing vinyl acetate, crotonic acid or allyloxyacetic acid, or a terpolymer of vinyl acetate, crotonic acid and allyloxyacetic acid. Group A esters are esters of an unsaturated alcohol with a short chain carboxylic acid or a short chain alcohol with an unsaturated acid, optionally containing -O-, -S- or -NH- groups in the carbon chain; group B acids are 3-butenoic, 2-pentenoic, 4- pentenoic, 2 - hexenoic, 2 - octenoic, 10 - undecenoic, allylmalonic, crotyloxyacetic, allyloxyacetic, methallyloxyacetic, 3-allyloxypropionic, allylthioacetic, allylaminoacetic and vinyloxyacetic acids. Group A 1 esters are vinyl propionate, butyrate and methoxyacetate, allyl acetate, propionate, butyrate and ethoxyacetate, methallyl acetate, propionate, butyrate, and ethylaminopropionate, crotyl acetate, propionate, butyrate and methylthioacetate, methyl, butyl and octyl crotonate, ethyl vinyl. acetate, butyl and hexyl allylacetate, ethyl vinyloxyacetate, ethyl and octyl allyloxyacetate, ethyl and octyl allylthioacetate, ethyl and octyl allylaminoacetate, diethyl allylmalonate, methyl undecylenate, butyl crotyloxyacetate, ethyl methallyloxyacetate, ethyl 2-pentenoate and crotyl methylthioacetate, and group B 1 acids are unsaturated acids whose carbon chains optionally contain -O- -S- or -NH-. Polymerization is effected in suspension, bulk or solution. Preferably the acidic polymer is neutralized with an amino alcohol or morpholine. Solutions of the copolymers in alcohols are used as hair setting compositions or lacquers after neutralization with diisopropylamine, 2- amino-2-methyl (or ethyl)-propanediol-1,3, 2- amino - 2 - methyl (or ethyl) - propanol - 1, and may contain perfume, cetarlon and water for setting lotions and fluorochloromethanes for aerosol lacquers.
