A decorative cosmetics product (such as a lipstick) comprising at least one wax, vegetable or mineral oil, lanolin or a fatty acid, alcohol or ester derived from lanolin, as base, 4 to 10% by weight of at least one organophilic suspending agent and 3 to 15‹C by weight based on the weight of the product, of metallic platelets having an average particle size of from 100 to 150 microns may be prepared by mixing the ingredients so as to render the final mixture homogeneous. The product may also contain a coloured pigment and/or a surface-active agent such as a polyoxyethyleneated, polyoxypropylenated or polyglycerolated fatty alcohol, e.g. polyglycerolated lanolin. Preferably the platelets are made of aluminium, have angular geometric shapes and are coated with a coloured or colourless varnish. Preferably the suspending agent is thixotropic e.g. bentonite and/or montmorillonite which has been rendered organophilic such as a quaternary ammonium salt of a montmorillonite clay.

A make-up composition comprises a waterinsoluble film-former which adheres to the skin and a volatile solvent therefor. both of which are incapable of harming skin and the mixture of which has a viscosity of at least 600 c.p.s., and a decorative additive which is a soluble dye, a polymer containing chromophoric groups, a nacreous pigment or a finely-divided metal, and which is suitable for application to the skin. A plasticizer may also be included. Exemplified film-formers are polymethylacrylate, nitrocellulose, cellulose acetobutyrate, a toluene-sulphonamide-formol resin and shellac. Exemplified decorative additives are powdered Al, two proprietary yellow metal pigments and pearl essence in 12% guanine solution. Conventional solvents/plasticizers are used.

[Also in Divisions C3 and C4] A nail hardening composition comprises 3- 10% by wt. of one or more monoaldehydes containing at least 2 carbon atoms or polyaldehydes containing more than 2 carbon atoms, one or more natural or synthetic resins, and one or more solvents for the resin. Specified aldehydes are acetaldehyde, propionaldehyde, butyraldehyde, glutaric aldehyde, saccharose dialdehyde, and starch dialdehyde. Water-soluble resins are preferred, and form a water-washable coating; water-insoluble resins, when used, can be compounded in a conventional clear or coloured nail varnish. Specified resins include vinyl polymers and copolymers, as such or in salt or semiester form, acrylic polymers, cellulose derivatives, shellac and gum arabic.
