Abstract: The invention comprises anthraquinones of the formula where Z is p-phenylene, and R and R1 are alkyl of 1-4 carbon atoms or together with the nitrogen atom form a heterocyclic ring. The corresponding quaternary ammonium salts and acid addition salts are also claimed. The compounds are prepated by reacting 1,4-diamino - 5 - nitro - anthraquinone with a compound of the formula The compounds, and in addition those wherein Z is (CH2)n where n is 2-6 are used to dye keratinic fibres.ALSO:Compositions for the dyeing of keratinic fibres comprise a compound of the formula where 2 is -(CH2)n- or P-phenylene, n is 2-6 and R and R1 is alkyl of 1-4 carbon atoms or form a ring with the nitrogen atom, or an acid addition or quaternary ammonium salt thereof, together with a solvent for the anthraquinone compound. Examples describe the lyeing of air from solutions of dye in aqueous sodium carbonate, aqueous lactic acid, and an aqueous solution containing P-toluylenediamine, m-diaminoanisole sulphate, resorcinol, m-aminophenol, P-aminophenol, ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid, ammonium thioglycolate and ammonia. Compositions comprising an aqueous solution of 1,4-diamino-5-(a -dimethylaminopropyl) amino-anthraquinone are disclaimed excepting those which also contain a wetting, dispersing or penetrating or hair-swelling agent, an emollient or a perfume.

[Also in Division D1] The invention comprises dyes having the general formula. in which one X is -NH-Z, the other two are hydrogen in which Z is a group -ArNRR 1 in which Ar is an arylene radical, R and R 1 are alkyl (C 1 -C 4 ) groups or form together with the nitrogen atom a piperidine or morpholine ring or alternatively Z may be the group -(CH 2 ) n NRR 1 in which R and R 1 form part of the heterocyclic rings as above, n has the values 2-6. The invention also comprises the quaternary ammonium salts of the above, especially the methyl sulphate and benzyl chloride derivatives. The dyes are obtained by the reaction of a diamine of formula NH 2 -(CH 2 ) n -NRR 1 or NH 2 -Ar-NRR 1 with quinizarin, leuco quinizarin (followed by oxidation) or 1,5- or 1,8-dichloroanthraquinone followed if required by quaternization in the presence or absence of an organic solvent. Many examples of these dyes are given.

They may be obtained by diazotizing 2-aminobenzothiazole and coupling with an aromatic amine of formula and optionally converting the product into the corresponding mono- or bis-quaternary salt, by reaction with a C 1 -C 4 alkyl halide or dimethyl sulphate. Examples are given for the preparation of the compounds. They are useful as hair dyes.

Abstract: The invention comprises dyes of the formula wherein n is from 2 to 6 and R and R1 are each alkyl radicals of 1-3 carbon atoms or together with the nitrogen atom form a saturated mononuclear heterocyclic radical, and their acid addition and quaternary ammonium salts. The dyes are made by heating b-chloro- or b bromo-anthraquinone with an alkylene diamine of the formula in pyridine, and if desired treating the tertiary amine obtained with a quaternating agent. The dyes dye hair in yellow shades. In examples, 2 (b diethylaminoethylamino)-, 2 - (g - di - ethylaminopropylamino)- and 2 - (b - morpholinoethylamino) anthraquinone are made and quaternated with dimethyl sulphate.
