Abstract: Hair and other keratinous fibres are permanently deformed by constraining the fibres to a desired configuration, treating them at room temperature with an aqueous solution comprising a salt of a mercapto carboxylic acid with an organic base and a carbonate of an organic base and having a pH of 7-9, and then setting the configuration of the fibres by oxidation. Salts of thioglycollic and thiolactic acids are preferably used in concentrations of 0.3-1.5 mols per litre and the preferred organic bases are guanidine, monoethylamine, monoethanolamine, monoisopropanolamine, diethanolamine and morpholine. The concentration of the carbonate of the organic base may be 0.1-1.5 mols per litre. The treating solution may be prepared by exactly neutralising a mercaptocarboxylic acid solution with an organic base and adding thereto the required quantity of the carbonate of an organic base, or a slight excess of an organic base over that required to neutralise the acid may be added to a solution of a mercapto carboxylic acid and carbon dioxide passed into the solution to convert the excess base into its carbonate. The hair may also be impregnated with the aqueous treating solution before being wound on curlers.
