[Also in Division B5] An inflatable pressure applying tool comprises a first inflatable pressure bag 22 which dilates on inflation and deflates to flatness and has a pressure applying side 26 and pressure resisting side meeting at edges which delimit a first pressure area, and second smaller similar inflatable bags 34 adhered to specific areas of the first bag on a surface other than the pressure applying side 26. The bags are provided with fluid pressure inlets. They are constructed from rubber impregnated glass fibre layers laminated together and the extent of the bags is defined by patterns 32, 36 of polytetrafluroethylene adhered to one side of the bags and around the edges of which a glass fibre material is folded. Adherance of one surface of the pattern to the bags is achieved by etching the surface to be adhered followed by vulcanization. The tools are used for bonding a skin e to the surface of a helicopter propeller. High pressure is required to bond the skin to the metal parts b and c of the propeller. This pressure is applied by small bags 34. A smaller pressure, applied by the large bag 22, is required to bond the skin to the part b which is of plastics foam.

A helicopter rotor blade comprises a H-section spar, the web 12 and flanges 14, 15 of which increase progressively in thickness from tip portion, Fig. 12, to the root portion, Fig. 8, terminating at the root in a solid fitting which is formed with rotor head attachment plates 21, 22. At the tip the web 12 is cut away to accommodate a mass balance weight 42 secured to the flanges by attachments 43, and at intermediate points along the span the web is thickened locally (Figs. 9 and 11, not shown). The outer surfaces of the spar flanges are rebated for a shaped stainless steel leading edge member 17 and trailing edge skins 16 which are adhesively secured to a honeycomb core 38.

A hollow fixture 10, for use in bonding structural members (e.g. metal elements a ... d, e, f, g, g 1 , g 11 , h) to form an aerofoil (e.g. a helicopter blade), has upper and lower portions 12, 14 hollowed from a parting plane i-i so as to define a cavity 20 wherein the structural members a-h may be received, including aft converging portions of the upper and lower inner surfaces, one 12 of the surfaces having a recess 24, in which fluid pressure applying means (e.g. an inflatable tube 30 and a rail 26) fill the recess, apply inward pressure at the converging surface (e.g. at 28) reacted by a fixture portion 34 on the opposite portion 14 of the fixture, the inward pressure and reaction are capable of applying a forward component of force reacted by a rearward pressure reacting member 38 (which may have an inflatable bag 40) forward of the recess 24. The fixture may also include a recess 24 1 at the trailing edge having a rail 26 1 and an inflatable bag 30 1 to apply a forward pressure to assist with members 18, 18 1 , 18 11 in holding the metal elements a ... h while the areas s are heated and pressed together.
