A method of pultrusion includes collating an assembly of substantially longitudinally continuous fibrous elements (126, 18', 18") and a resin from a bath (132, 122), pulling the elements (126, 18', 18") and the resin through a die (54) to shape the elements and to effect setting of the resin, where one of the elements is a mat (18a) specially designed to transport primarily transverse fibers (32) into the part (10). The mat has a first layer (34) containing a plurality of glass fibers (32) which extend substantially transversely of the mat (18a) so as to be arranged in the part (10) to provide strength to the part (10) primarily in the transverse direction.

The present invention is directed to a reinforcing structure adapted for use in the manufacture of a pultruded part where the reinforcing structure is pulled through a pultrusion die in a continuous longitudinal pull direction. The reinforcing structure comprises a permeable transport web of staple fibe rs and a plurality of first reinforcing fibers attached to the permeable transport web. The portion of the first reinforcing fibers extending in a transverse direction comprises at least 40% of a volume of materials comprising the reinforcing structure.

The invention provides a composite part comprising a matrix and coated, holl ow microspheres. The coated, hollow microspheres are generally polymeric sphere s with an inorganic exterior coating such as calcium carbonate. In one embodiment, the composite part is a fenestration component formed by a pultrusion process, and may include reinforcing fiber material such as roving or mat. In some embodiments, the matrix is made from a curable precursor that includes a thermosetting resin and coated, hollow microsphere s. A method for making a pultruded composite part incorporating coated, hollow microspheres is also provided.
