    Abstract: A method of producing heatable mirrors comprising depositing onto a ribbon of hot glass (1) during the production process a reflecting coating (2) whereby the mirrors so formed have a visible light reflection of at least 70% and depositing an electroconductive heating layer (7) onto the mirrors. The present invention also provides a heatable mirror comprising a glass substrate carrying a non-metallic reflecting coating whereby the mirror has a visible light reflection of at least 70% and an electroconductive heating layer deposited on the coated substrate.

    Abstract: A method of producing mirrors comprising depositing onto a ribbon of hot glass (1) during the production process a coating comprising a reflecting layer (3) and at least two reflection enhancing layers (4,5) whereby the mirrors have a visible light reflection of at least 70%. There is also provided a mirror having such a coating. In a preferred embodiment the coating comprises: an inner layer (3) having a refractive index of at least 1.6; an intermediate layer (4) of relatively low refractive index and; an outer layer (5) having a refractive index of at least 1.6; the intermediate layer (4) having a refractive index less than the refractive index of either said inner layer (3) or said outer layer (5) and less than 3, provided that at least one of said inner and outer layers (3,5) is of silicon, the aggregate refractive index of the inner and outer layers (3,5) is at least 5.5, and the thicknesses of the layers are such that the mirror has a visible light reflection of at least 70%. In an alternative embodiment, one of the inner and outer layers (3,5) may instead be composed of a low refractive index reflective metal.

    Abstract: The green reflection colour of back surface mirrors produced by deposition of a reflecting layer (5) over two reflection enhancing layers (3,4) on a glass substrate (1) is controlled by selection of the layer materials and thicknesses to provide a reflection colour having an a* value greater than -6, with a light reflection of at least 65%, preferably at least 70%. The inner reflection enhancing layer (3) and reflecting layer (5) are preferably of silicon, with the inner reflection enhancing layer having an optical thickness less than 125 nm; the intermediate reflection enhancing layer (4), which may be of silicon oxide, preferably has an optical thickness greater than 125 nm. The mirror may be produced by depositing the successive layers (3,4,5) on a hot ribbon of glass during the glass production process.
