Abstract: Pile fibres are passed through the primary jute and adhered thereto by means of a latex composition (I) of a film forming polymer, the latex coating is dried, the scrim applied to the underside of the coated pile fibre-primary jute composite and adhered to the composite by means of a thermoplastic polymeric composition, e.g. a thermoplastic rubbery polymer, including a block copolymer having terminal polymeric blocks of an alkenyl-subd. aromatic hydrocarbon monomer and non-terminal block(s) of conjugated diolefinic hydrocarbon monomer. The scrim is, e.g. polypropylene as well as the pile fibres and the primary jute. I is e.g. an aq. latex of a polymer of a conjugated diolefin. The carpet is cheap and is suitable for indoors and outdoors. The process overcomes adhesion problems.

Abstract: 1320710 Foam coated fabrics POLYMER CORP Ltd 7 Oct 1970 [5 Nov 1969] 47730/70 Heading B2E Foam rubber-backed fabrics are produced by applying to a fabric surface a thin precoating of a foamed latex composition in amount of less than 12 ounces dry weight per square yard of fabric, optionally partially or completely drying the precoating, applying over the precoating a thick backing coating of a different foamed latex compound comprising a rubbery polymer, filler and a vulcanizing agent for the rubbery polymer and drying the backing coating and vulcanizing the rubbery polymer of the backing coating in its foamed state. The precoat compound may contain 0 to less than 100 parts filler per 100 parts of rubber. The foams may be applied by spraying, spreading or by means of a lick-roller. The precoated fabric may be heated, as by infrared lamps, to evaporate the water before application of the top coating. The rubber may be natural or synthetic such as homopolymers of dienes, such as butadiene and isoprene or copolymers of dienes with vinyl halides, styrenes, unsaturated acids such as acrylic acid, and their amides, nitriles and esters such as acrylamide, acrylonitrile, and methylacrylate. The fabric may be a carpet.

Abstract: 1,188,360. Laminated carpet. POLYMER CORP. Ltd. 11 July, 1967 [9 Aug., 1966], No. 31888/67. Heading B5N. A process for preparing double-backed tufted carpets in which carpets pile fibres are looped through a woven textile base, comprises applying a latex compound in foamed form, in an amount less than 20 ounces dry weight basis per square yard of carpet, to the underside of the textile base through which the pile fibres are looped, contacting the foam covered surface of the base with a backing sheet and drying, by heating, the assembly so obtained, the contacting and drying being so carried out as to destroy substantially all of the foam structure of the latex compound. The latex compound is defined as an aqueous latex of a rubbery polymer containing at least 50% by weight of total solids prior to being compounded, and being compounded by blending with other ingredients, e.g. thickeners, fillers, curatives, antioxidants or tackifiers. The latex may be of natural rubber or synthetic rubber, e.g. SBR, NBR or carboxylated SBR, and may include up to 400 parts by weight of filler, e.g. whiting, per 100 parts of dry rubber. The latex may also include a polyacrylate thickener and a small amount of a soap. The latex is foamed by air whisking using a foaming head, whisk, or beater, or by chemical foaming agents and is applied to the back of the carpet by spreading with a doctor blade, spraying, or using a lick-roller. A backing sheet, e.g. of woven or non-woven fabric, paper, polypropylene or open weave jute is then brought into contact with the wet foamed latex and the assembly passed between nip rollers. The carpet is then dried in an oven, which also cures the latex. The carpet may comprise cellulose acetate or acrylic pile fibres in a woven jute base.
