    Abstract: A mounting arrangement for a shipboard cable engine for the laying or recovery of submarine cables is described. A respective mounting chassis is provided for each module of a plurality of modules containing cable traction and guide elements for arrangement in tandem fashion. The chassis are rigidly secured to each other end to end and are provided with vertical leaf springs attached to deck mountings in the form of pedestals and with horizontal leaf springs attached to the deck at their mid-points. At each of the two ends of the tandem connected chassis a respective resistance strain gauge load cell is provided connected to the deck. Signals from the strain gauges are added algebraically to indicate the tension in a cable being laid or recovered. Compensation for the pitching of the ship can be provided by use of a resiliently mounted pendulum.

    Abstract: A cable engine for the laying or recovery of submarine cables includes hydraulically powered traction wheels fitted with pneumatic tires to apply traction to a cable. The traction wheels are arranged in pairs, each pair contacting the cable at opposite ends of a diameter, and are resiliently mounted to enable a repeater to pass through the engine without damage. Resiliently mounted guide rollers may be employed in addition to the traction wheels. A shipboard mounting for the engine is shown and includes a load cell arrangement to enable cable tension to be monitored. A hydraulic control system for use in both laying and recovering operations is described.

    Abstract: 1,170,941. Repeater housings. POSTMASTER GENERAL. 25 May, 1967 [25 May, 1966], No. 23369/66. Heading H2E. An aperture in the outer steel casing 6, Fig. 1, of a submarine cable repeater housing is closed by a steel bulkhead 7, a castellated skirt member 10 on the casing 6 around the aperture and an adjacent castellated skirt portion 15 of the bulkhead 7 being coaxial and of the same diameter, and a polythene sealing member 16 is moulded around members 10, 15 being keyed to the castellations thereof, as described and claimed in Specification 1,170,942. An extension sleeve 17, Fig. 2, is screwed on to threaded projection 9 of casing 6, and a retaining ring 19 is screwed into the other end of sleeve 17, the ring 19 having a plurality of threaded holes equidistantly spaced around it, each hole containing a grub-screw 21 which exerts pressure on a push-rod 20 bearing against member 15, to retain bulkhead 7 against casing 6; a lead seal 22 may be located between the latter two members. Member 15 may be shaped to provide an annular groove which receives an inner flange 23 of the moulded sealing member 16; and the recess in the bulkhead 7 may be enlarged to receive a heater. In a further modification (Fig. 3, not shown), sealing member 16 is reduced in diameter around flange 23. A cable 3 (Fig. 1) is sealed into inner casing 2 of the repeater housing, and the cable 14 for a moisture detector 13 is sealed through bulkhead 7, both in known manner.
