    Abstract: Additionally, when electrical arcing occurs between the commutator and the brushes, the PCB 180 mounted over the commutator acts as a shield to absorb a portion of the radiation emitted by the arcing so as to reduce the EMI characteristics of the universal motor. The filter circuit 184 is electrically close connected to the brushes 162 via clips 161 to reduce the emission of electromagnetic radiation from the universal motors leads, the clips acting to secure the PCB in position.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a universal motor in which a printed circuit board(PCB) is mounted on a rectifier to play a role of an electrical shielding for electromagnetic interference(EMI) generated by an electric arc between the rectifier and a brush. SOLUTION: A universal motor comprises a stator, a rotor, the brush and the printed circuit board(PCB). The rotor includes a shaft, and a rotor core is mounted on the shaft near the rectifier. The rotor core is electrically connected with the rectifier to rotate within the stator. The brush supplies an electrical output to the rectifier and is elastically in contact with the rectifier. A filter circuit reduces electromagnetic radiation from the universal motor and is in contact with the brush. The printed circuit board is mounted on the brush. When electronic arc is generated between the rectifier and brush, the printed circuit board functions as the electrical shielding to absorb a part of radiation generated by electronic arc in order to reduce the electromagnetic interference characteristic of the universal motor.

The stator has serial windings and parallel windings, installed on the opposing sides of the motor, to create a magnetic field. The armature, installed between the serial windings and parallel windings, provides a torque to drive a carrier. The parallel windings are connected in parallel to the armature to form a parallel circuit and in turn, the parallel circuit is connected in series to the serial windings to form a combination circuit.
