PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and apparatus for improving the throughput during transmission of data packets within a plurality of time slots in a high data rate communication system.SOLUTION: A method for receiving a first packet from a source network node includes: generating a data rate control signal based on signal quality of a received signal transmitted by the source network node; sending the data rate control signal to the source network node; receiving a first signal having a data rate based on the data rate control signal from the source network node; measuring signal quality of the first signal to form a first signal quality metric; and sending a first feedback signal based on the first signal quality metric.

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To properly modify power allocation for power control bits in a cellular network. SOLUTION: A power allocation value for power control information transmitted from a first station to a plurality of stations is determined by receiving data rate control information from the plurality of stations in a communications system. Supplemental information relating to the data rate control information is then generated, and an improved signal strength value is produced in accordance with the supplemental information. The power allocation value for the power control information transmitted from the first station to the plurality of stations is determined in accordance with the improved signal strength value. An apparatus and method for adjusting a power control setpoint for a power control mechanism with a first state and a second state in a wireless communication system. The method comprises: determining the state of the power control mechanism; when the state of the power control mechanism is the first state, adjusting the power control setpoint in accordance with a first adjustment scheme; and when the state of the power control mechanism is the second state, adjusting the power control setpoint in accordance with a second adjustment scheme.

In a high data rate communication system, a method and apparatus for improved throughput while transmitting data packets within multiple time slots. In order to avoid unnecessary retransmissions of a packet, a subscriber station sends a Stop-Repeat signal to a base station, causing the base station to cease further transmissions of the packet. In order to enable successful decoding of a packet, a subscriber station sends a Continue-Repeat signal to a base station, causing the base station to send retransmissions of the packet during time slots beyond a predetermined default number of time slots.

In a method for packet data transmission from at least one Access Point to an Access Terminal, data request messages are received from a plurality of Access Terminals. A transmission of data from the Access Terminal having the highest ratio of requested data rate to average served rate is scheduled, and an Access Point transmits data at a randomly varying transmit power, or at a transmit power in synchronism with neighbouring Access Points, in accordance with the data request message.

Method and a system method and system for a dynamic adjustment of a data request channel in a communication system are disclosed. A value of at least one variable affecting the data request channel margin is determined in accordance with conditions in the communication system. The at least one variable is then set to the determined value. The value of the at least one variable is then conveyed to a subscriber station in an adjustment message. The subscriber station determines whether the adjustment message was transmitted by a serving sector or a non-serving sector; and adjusts at least one attribute of the communication channel in accordance with the determination, thus adjusting the DRC channel margin.
