    Abstract: A receiver unit includes a first buffer that receives and stores digitized samples at a particular sample rate and a data processor that retrieves segments of digitized samples from the first buffer and processes the retrieved segments with a particular set of parameters values. The data processor is operated based on a processing clock having a frequency that is (e.g., then or more times) higher than the sample rate. Multiple instances of the received signal can be processed by retrieving and processing multiple segments of digitized samples from the first buffer, the receiver unit typically further includes a receiver that receives and processes a transmitted signal to provide the digitized samples and a controller that dispatches tasks for the data processor. The data processor can be designed to include a correlator, a symbol demodulation and combiner, a first accumulator, and a second buffer, or a combination thereof. The correlator despreads the retrieved segments of digitized samples with corresponding segments of PN despreading sequences to provide correlated samples, which are further processed by the symbol demodulation and combiner to provide processed symbols. The second buffer stores the processed symbols, and can be designed to provide de-interleaving of the processed symbols.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus that determines how much power to allocate to each of a plurality of reverse link power control (RLPC) Channels to be transmitted from a base station, based upon data rate control (DRC) messages transmitted to the base station. Historical information is used to determine the quality of the Forward Link over which the RLPC is to be transmitted. If the history of the DRCs received indicates that the remote station to which the RLPC Channel is to be directed has not transmitted a DRC recently, then the base station allocates power to the RLPC Channels based upon information provided to the base station in DRCs that were received by the base station, but that were directed to other base stations. Accordingly, the base station can allocate power among the RLPC Channels without having received explicit information as to the quality of the Forward Link between the base station and every remote station intended to receive the information on the RLPC Channels.

    Abstract: Techniques to adjust the phase rotation of a modulated signal to compensate for the phase rotation introduced by circuit elements associated with the transmit signal path. In one implementation, at least one control signal is received, with each control signal being provided to adjust a particular characteristic (e.g., gain, bias current) of one or more circuit elements (e.g., VGA, PA) associated with the transmit signal path. The circuit elements can be located directly in, or operatively coupled to, the transmit signal path. A phase rotation corresponding to an operating state defined by the received control signal(s) is then determined, and the phase of the modulated signal is rotated by an amount related to the determined phase rotation. The phase rotation compensation can be performed at various locations along the transmit signal path by rotating either the data, the PN sequences used to spectrally spread the data, or the carrier signals used to modulate the data.

    Abstract: A transmitter directed, distributed receiver using multi-user diversity provided by the distribution of the receiver. Advantage is taken of the uncorrelated variations over time in the condition of communication links between a common transmitter and several users. The greater the variation in the quality of a particular link over time, the greater the increase in total system throughput provided. An scheduler metric (or scheduler metric) represents the instantaneous quality of the communication link between each user and the transmitter with respect to the average quality of the link. Alternatively, the scheduler metric represents the instantaneous channel condition with respect to the average data throughput over that channel. The common transmitting station uses the scheduler metric to directly compare the desirability of granting each channel access with the desirability of granting each other channel access. The users with links that have the greatest scheduler metric are provided access to the channels.

    Abstract: A system and method for reducing average idle current in a telecommunications system handset by decreasing the power when demodulation of the incoming signal and decoding of FOCC data stream is unnecessary is provided. The system and method supplant the need to decode all five repeated FOCC data words. The system performs various testing on each of the five data words as they are received. If the data words satisfy particular conditions, such as comprising control filler words or match one another based on the result of testing, no further processing of words occurs until the next sync is received and sleep mode is initiated. According to a further feature, the system may erase the sync/dotting sequence if and only if the prior sync word is successfully decoded. The system and method support both A and B slotting and power down components of the handset, such as RF circuitry and/or data sync timers.
