Abstract: In a channel structure for use in communication systems, two sets of physical channels, one for the forward link (50) and another for the reverse link (52), are utilized to facilitate communication of a variety of logical channels. The physical channels comprise data and control channels. In the exemplary embodiment, the data channels comprise fundamental channels which are used to transmit voice traffic, data traffic, high speed data, and other overhead information and supplemental channels which are used to transmit high speed data. The fundamental channels can be released when the remote stations are idle to more fully utilize the available capacity. The control channels are used to transmit paging and control messages and scheduling information.

Abstract: In a communication system capable of variable rate transmission, schedulin g of high speed data transmission improves utilization of the forward link and decreases the transmission delay in data communication. Each remote station (6) is assigned one primary code channel for the duration of the communication with a cell. Secondary code channels of various types and transmission capabiliti es can be assigned by a channel scheduler (12) for scheduled transmission of data traffic at high rates. Secondary code channels are assigned in accordance with a set of system goals, a list of parameters, and collected information on the status of the communication network. Secondary code channels can be grouped into sets of secondary code channels. Data is partitioned in data frames and transmitted over the primary and secondary code channels which have been assigned to the scheduled user.

Abstract: A wireless transmitter comprising an encoder for encoding a set of information bits to provide a set of code symbols at a data rate. A demultiplexer provides the set of code symbols in first and second code symbol subsets, each having different code symbol rates, to first and second modulators, wherein the data rate is equal to a combination of the different code symbol rates. The first and second modulators respectively modulate the first and second code symbol subsets according to first and second code symbol rate formats, respectively, wherein the different code symbol rates have a ratio equal to a number other than one, to provide a modulated first code symbol subset and a second code symbol subset. A transmission subsystem provides the modulated first code symbol subset on a first carrier frequency and the modulated second code symbol subset on a second carrier frequency.
