Abstract: A method and apparatus for measuring time related to satellite data message s which are used with satellite positioning systems (SPS). In one method, a first record of at least a portion of a satellite data message is received at an entity, which is typically a basestation. The first record is compared with a second record of the satellite data message, where the first record and the second record overlap at least partially in time. Then a time is determined from this comparison, and this time indicates when the first record (or the source from which the first record was obtained) was received at a remote entity which is typically a mobile SPS receiver. Various other methods of the invention are described and various apparatuses of the invention are also described. The methods and apparatuses measure time o f day using SPS signals without reading the satellite data messages which are transmitted as data within these signals. The methods and apparatuses are suitable for situations in which the received signal level is too weak to allow reading of the satellite data messages.

Abstract: Methods and apparatuses for processing Satellite Positioning System (SPS) signals. In one exemplary method, a first set of frequency coefficients, which corresponds to a first Doppler frequency of an SPS signal, is determined, and said SPS signal is processed in a matched filter with the first set of frequency coefficients during a first window of time. A second set of frequency coefficients, which corresponds to a second Doppler frequency of the SPS signal, is determined, and the SPS signal is processed in the matched filter with the second set of frequency coefficients during a second window of time, where the first and second windows of time occur within a period of time which is not greater than one SPS frame period. In another exemplary method, a first SPS signal is processed in a matched filter with a first set of pseudonoise (PN) coefficients during a first window of time, where the first set of PN coefficients corresponds to the first SPS signal, and a second SPS signal is processed in the matched filter with a second set of PN coefficients (which correspond with the second SPS signal) during a second window of time, wherein the first window and the second windows occur within a period of time not greater than one SPS frame period.

Abstract: Methods and apparatuses for frequency synchronizing basestations in a cellular communication system. In one aspect of the invention, a method to predict a timing of transmission of a basestation in a cellular communication system includes: receiving a first time tag for a first timing marker in a first cellular signal transmitted from the basestation; receiving a second time tag of a second timing marker in a second cellular signal transmitted from the basestation; and computing a frequency related to the basestation using the first and second time tags. Each of the time tags are determined using at least one satellite positioning system signal received at a mobile station which receives the corresponding time marker.

Abstract: Methods and apparatuses for determining a position of a mobile satellite positioning system (SPS) receiver which is coupled to a communication receiver or transceiver. In one exemplary method, a change in a communication signal received by the communication receiver is determined. A parameter, based on the change, is determined, and SPS signals from SPS satellites are processed according to the parameter. According to further details of this method, the change involves the fluctuation of the level of the communication signal and the parameter is a motion information which specifies a frequency range for searching for SPS signals in the process of acquiring the SPS signals from SPS satellites. In an alternative embodiment the change in the communication signal is a change in the transmitted signal in response to power control commands. Apparatuses, such as a mobile communication system which includes an SPS receiver and a communication receiver, are also described.

Abstract: A mobile system, such as a wireless phone, communicates its location or other position information, such as pseudoranges, to a server system and optionally sends permission criteria defining which other mobile systems are allowed to access its location. In the case where the mobile system does not provide its location, the server determines the location using the other position information provided (e.g. pseudoranges for satellites in view of the mobile system). The server system sends the location to other mobile systems in accordance with the permission criteria, with or without a request from another mobile system for the location. If no permission criteria has been sent by the mobile system, the server system queries the mobile system for the permission criteria in response to a request for the location. If no permission criteria is sent by the mobile system, or if the permission criteria sent denies the request, the server system can, alternately, not reply to the request or reply with an error message. The permission criteria can include additional access limitations such as dates or times during which access is permitted or denied, and geographic areas in which access is permitted or denied.

Abstract: A system for geographically locating and tracking mobile stations within a mobile communication network. The system includes an equipment identity register (EIR) comprising equipment identifiers, such as internal mobile equipment identities (IMEIs), subscriber identity modules (SIMs), or some combination thereof, that are each uniquely associated with mobile stations operable within the network. Each IMEI may be used to identify a particular status of an associated mobile station. A mobile switching center (MSC) or an external location services (LCS) client may be configured to identify a targeted mobile station based upon its status (for example, lost, stolen, malfunctioning, and the like). A serving mobile location center (SMLC) responsively provides position location information for the targeted mobile station.
