Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus and method for providing variable rate data in a communications system using statistical multiplexing. SOLUTION: This invention discloses the variable rate transmission system wherein when the capacity of a traffic channel is equal to or more than a data rate of a packet, the packet of variable rate data generated by a variable rate data source (20) is modulated on the traffic channel by a traffic channel modulator (30). When the capacity of the traffic channel is smaller than the data rate, the packet of variable rate data is modulated onto the traffic channel by the traffic channel modulator (30) and modulated onto at least one overflow channel by a traffic channel modulator (32). PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for deep paging in a communication system employing orthogonal channelizing codes, such as Walsh sequences, of predetermined length m, that does not require a high powered paging channel.SOLUTION: The method includes the steps of generating a paging channel message which is combined with a Walsh sequence having a length greater than or equal to 2 m, and transmitting the paging channel message at a data rate of less than 480 bits per second (bps). By transmitting the paging channel message at a low data rate and receiving energy over a 1000 times longer period, the message is able to penetrate buildings and other structures or high attenuation environments, thereby allowing one to successfully page a user terminal that is inside such a structure or area. Preferably, the paging channel message is formed using an auxiliary Walsh sequence of 65536 chips in length, and the data rate is less than 10 bps.

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To compensate for the Doppler effect in a communication system in which messages including a pilot signal and a paging channel and an auxiliary pilot signal and an auxiliary paging channel transmitted at a lower data rate than the pilot signal and the paging channel, are transmitted.SOLUTION: A method for deep paging includes: a step of receiving ephemeris messages transmitted from a gateway at a user terminal; a step of storing the ephemeris messages in the user terminal; a step of determining the location of the user terminal; a step of determining Doppler based on the location and the ephemeris messages stored in the user terminal; a step of capturing a pilot signal or an auxiliary pilot signal on the basis of the determined Doppler; and a step of monitoring a paging channel or an auxiliary paging channel on the basis of the captured pilot signal or auxiliary pilot signal.
Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a handoff technique which enables a soft handoff between adjacent beams from a single satellite, while reducing utilization of system resources. SOLUTION: System users detect transitions in service between a current service area (B10) and an adjacent service area (B2), and request a forward link channel in the new service area (B2) when a detected signal strength for the new service area exceeds predetermined threshold levels. The forward communications link in the current service area (B10) is maintained until the strength of the new service area (B2) signal reaches a certain level and appropriate channel quality is confirmed, on the basis of various known criteria. PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of deep paging which does not require a high powered paging channel. SOLUTION: The method includes the steps of: generating a paging channel message which is combined with a Walsh sequence having a length equal to or greater than 2m; and transmitting the paging channel message at a data rate less than 480 bits/sec (bps). By transmitting the page channel message at a low data rate and integrating collected energy over a period longer by a factor on the order of 1,000, the message is able to penetrate buildings and other structures or high attenuation environments, thereby allowing one to successfully page a user terminal that is inside such a structure or area. Preferably, the paging channel message is formed using an auxiliary Walsh sequence on the order of 65536 chips in length, and the data rate is less than 10 bps. COPYRIGHT: (C)2011,JPO&INPIT

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a system and a method for rain fade burden sharing in a satellite based communication system. SOLUTION: The system can improve a communication link with a particular user by varying the data rate. The data rate can be varied by reducing a coding rate to compensate for low signal quality. In a time multiplexed communication system where multiple users time multiplex the available communication bandwidth, the system can concurrently adjust a time allocated to a user based in part on the coding rate. The time allocated to a user can be increased for decreased coding rates in order to maintain a substantially stable symbol rate to the user for each time multiplex cycle of users. Abstract:
A satellite is linked to a number of gateways by a number of feeder links. When a degraded link is detected among the feeder links, communications are switched from the degraded link to a diversity link shared among the feeder links. In one embodiment, said diversity link is connected to a diversity gateway located outside a service area of the satellite. In another embodiment, the diversity link comprises channels distributed among the feeder links within the service area.
Abstract:
An air to ground communication system provides internet access to aircraft from ground based stations. The air to ground system shares spectrum with uplink portions of a satellite communication spectrum. Interference mitigation techniques are employed to avoid interference between the ground based communications and satellite communications. Fade mitigation techniques are employed to provide communication to aircraft at low angles of elevation in the presence of rain.
