Abstract: 19,564. Rasnick, N. W. Sept. 27. Smiths' forges.-A central underfeed device for the fuel is provided, consisting of a cylinder 10 with piston 13 attached to a sleeve 16 worked by arack. The tuyÞre 14 is attached at its lower end to a cross-piece 22 with depending portion 23 which acts as a support. The blast is fed by a tube 36, and is controlled by a valve 26 attached to a rod 27 capable of vertical and rotary adjustment and bent at right-angles at the bottom so as to rest on an inclined bar 30, the position of the rod on which determines the amount of opening of the valve. The lower end of the tuyÞre is closed by a valve 33 which slides on the rod 27 and is pressed to its seat by a spring 34 but can be pushed downwards, so as to become free from ashes, by means of a stud 35 which operates when the rod 27 is slipped into a depression of the bar 30. The hearth is preferably of sheet metal, strengthened at its edges by a metal frame 5, and having metal legs 3 bolted to it as shown in Fig. 5.
