Abstract: A three dimensional display comprises (a) a plurality of switchable screens (2a-e) arranged one behind the other, each screen being independently switchable between a strongly scattering and substantially transparent state; (b) projection means (3) for projecting a sequence of images, each image in the sequence corresponding to one of the switchable screens and forming part of an overall three-dimensional image; and (c) synchronized switching means (4) for switching each switchable screen synchronously with the projection of the sequence of images by the projection means, such that a particular switchable screen is in its strongly scattering state when image corresponding thereto is being projected and is in its substantially transparent state at least when the image corresponding to another screen is being projected and the particular screen is positioned between that another screen and either the projector or the viewer.

Abstract: An image projection arrangement is provided. The arrangement includes a light source assembly for producing a first light beam. A reflective image display system is arranged in the path of the first light beam and has at least one cell for generating an image to be projected. A projection lens system is arranged in the path of a second light beam originating from the image display system for projecting the image produced by the image display system onto a projection screen. Between the light source assembly and the image display system on the one hand, and between this system and the projection lens system on the other hand, a transition from a first to a second medium is provided. This transition occurs at an interface having a normal direction. The first and second media have different refractive indices. The transition is arranged such that one of the first and second light beams is totally reflected by the transition while the other light beam is transmitted by the transition. Between the light source assembly and the image display system on the one hand, and between this system and the projection lens system on the other and, an angle is formed, the bisector of this angle defining an optic axis of the system. The bisector of the angle is not parallel to the interface normal.

Abstract: A liquid crystal display comprises (a) a first transparent base; (b) a plurality of first picture electrodes on the first transparent base; (c) a plurality of data lines for supplying electrical signals to the first picture electrodes; (d) a second transparent base, parallel to and spaced apart from the first transparent base; (e) a plurality of second picture electrodes on the second transparent base; (f) a plurality of varistor elements made of a varistor material comprising zinc oxide as a primary metal oxide and cobalt and praseodymium oxides as additive metal oxides, in amounts of between 0.1 and 8.0 atom % cobalt and between 0.08 and 8.0 atom % praseodymium, one varistor element being associated with and in electrical contact each second picture electrode; (g) a plurality of scan lines for supplying electrical signals to the second picture electrodes via the respective associated varistor elements; and (h) electrooptically active liquid crystal material between the first and second picture electrodes. In a preferred embodiment, the plurality of varistor elements is in the form of a varistor array comprising an integral body of varistor material having two major opposing faces, one of the opposing faces having an array of indentations thereon, each indentation defining a varistor element.
