    Abstract: A cushioning member (10) for an article of footwear is provided having a series of interconnected chambers (26 and 42) filled with ambient or slightly pressurized air. Impedance means (74) is provided between selected chambers, in order to restrict the flow of air between the chambers (26 and 42). The shape and structure of the impedance means (74) determines the nature of the air flow between chambers (26 and 42), such that the cushioning member (10) can be tailored for various types of activities and body weights, by offering varying degrees of cushioning.

    Abstract: Inflatable footwear is disclosed in which an inflatable bag (25) under the foot is formed by two sheets of material welded together. Interior welds (28) are provided to moderate the thickness of the inflatable bag. A foam layer (62) having apertures (64) is positioned adjacent to the inflatable bag. The apertures (64) overlie the interior welds (28, 28') and are sized larger than the interior welds. Also described is a slide valve system (Fig. 11) which enables selective inflation of individual bladder chambers (32, 30).

    Abstract: A support and cushioning system for an article of footwear which includes a resilient insert (102) disposed between a midsole (606) and an outsole (604) of a shoe. The resilient insert (102) includes several chambers (104, 106, 108, 110) disposed in a heel portion (103) of the resilient insert (102). These chambers (104, 106, 108, 110) are fluidly interconnected to each other via periphery passages (136). A bladder (1002) having a fluidly interconnected heel chamber (1004) and forefoot chamber (1006) is also inserted above the midsole (606) to provide added cushioning to the wearer. In one embodiment, the resilient insert (102) contains air at ambient pressure and the bladder (1002) contains air at slightly above ambient pressure.
