Abstract: A draft inducer blower assembly 120 is for use with a gas-fuelled water heater (28, figure 7). The assembly comprises a housing, motor and a fan 124. The housing has an exhaust volute 130 surrounding the fan and a base 126 having an inlet port to receive exhaust gases from a flue of the water heater when the housing is mounted on top of the heater. The exhaust volute also has an exhaust passageway that extends to an exhaust port 136 that faces vertically upwards in use, and a cut-off 140 at a cut-off angle ‘α’ (alpha) relative to a rotation axis of the fan. In use, the cut-off angle extends at an angle that is no more than thirty degrees positive from horizontal, i.e. less than 30° positive, thereby resulting in a blower assembly having a shallower profile so the assembly may be used in situations where vertical clearance is limited. Ideally the cut-off angle is less than twenty degrees positive from horizontal or negative from horizontal (figure 3). The assembly may also include an elbow fitting and a cross-over pipe (44, figure 6) with a narrow centre section to bridge over the exhaust volute.
