Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce a catalyst comprising alumina base porous particles wherein, by specifying the physical properties of the particles, the macro-porosity of the catalyst for treating gas containing sulfur compounds can be optimized. SOLUTION: The catalyst comprises alumina base porous particles, and cumulative volume V0.1 formed from all pores equal to or larger than 0.1 μm in diameter is equal to or larger than 12 ml/catalyst 100 g, while cumulative volume V1 formed from all pores equal to or larger than 1 μm in diameter is such that V1 /V0.1 is 0.65 or more. Particularly, if porosity, surface and surface chemical properties are made constant, the shape of pore volume distribution of alumina base catalyst determines catalytic activity, and hence such physical properties are discovered. In this catalyst, for example, an oxide of any one of a number of metals such as cesium, zirconium, trivalent rare earth elements, nickel, and molybdenum, or any one of clay, silicate, and sulfated alkaline earth metals may be contained.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a catalyst particularly advantageous for producing elemental sulfur by applying Claus reaction and for treating organic sulfur compound by hydrolysis. SOLUTION: For a catalyst containing catalytically active sodium contained alumina as an essential component, a sodium content in alumina is 1,200 ppm-2,700 ppm expressed by weight of Na2 O. The catalyst is used for treatment of gas containing sulfur compound and/or for hydrolysis of organic sulfur compound.
