Abstract: 1,181,187. Acetic acid. RHONE-POULENC S.A. 25 Sept., 1968 [26 Sept., 1967], No. 45588/68. Heading C2C. Acetic acid is prepared by contacting but-2- ene with nitric acid in the presence of a vanadium compound as a catalyst. The nitric acid may be in aqueous solution (40-90% nitric acid) at a temperature of 20 to 100‹ C. Vanadium compounds mentioned are vanadium pentoxide, vanadium halide, VF 5 , vanadium oxyhalides, VOF 3 , VOBr 3 and VOCl 3 , vanadic sulphate, nitrate or phosphate, alkali metal or ammonium orthovanadates, metavanadates, hypovanadates and hexavanadates, vanadyl sulphate, nitrate and phosphate and vanadium sulphates. The nitrous vapours may be reoxidized to nitric acid either in the oxidation medium or in an external zone by oxygen or air.
