    Abstract: 863,690. Polymer blends. SOC. DES USINES CHIMIQUES RHONE-POULENC. Jan. 7, 1960 [Feb. 20, 1959], No. 682/60. Class 2(6). Homogeneous thermoplastic compositions comprise mixtures of (a) a copolymer of alphamethyl styrene (90-60%) and acrylonitrile (10- 40%) and (b) a graft copolymer in which the stem is a copolymer of alpha-methyl styrene and a diolefine in which the proportion of diolefin is 10-50% by weight and the grafted chains, which are present in amount 5-70% by weight of the stem copolymer, are obtained by the polymerization of an acrylic or methacrylic ester, optionally in admixture with styrene or acrylonitrile, or a mixture of styrene and acrylonitrile, the copolymer (a) making up 10-50% by weight, and the graft copolymer 90-50% by weight, of the mixture. The Example describes the preparation of a blend of alpha-methyl styrene-acrylonitrile copolymer with a polymer obtained by grafting a mixture of styrene and acrylonitrile on to a copolymer of butadiene and alpha-methyl styrene.

    Abstract: A shock-resistant thermoplastic composition consists of a mixture of (1) 85 to 70 parts by weight of a rigid copolymer itself consisting of 90 to 70 parts by weight of alpha-methylstyrene, and 10 to 30 parts by weight of acrylonitrile, with (2) 15 to 30 parts by weight of a ternary elastic copolymer composed of butadiene, acrylonitrile and styrene or alpha-methylstyrene, there being present 50 to 80 parts by weight of butadiene and 50 to 20 parts by weight of the other copolymerized substances, the relative proportion of acrylonitrile to the styrene or alpha-methyl styrene being as 20 to 60 parts by weight of acrylonitrile to 80 to 40 parts by weight of styrene or alpha-methyl styrene. The compositions may be obtained by mixing the copolymers by mechanical means or by mixing aqueous emulsions of the copolymers and then coagulating and drying. Specification 790,155 is referred to.
