Abstract: 1,080,847. Chemical contact apparatus &c. RHONEPOULENC S.A. June 6, 1966 [June 9, 1965], No. 25033/66. Heading B1F. A reactor, suitable for carrying out reactions between a gas and a liquid or between liquids in concurrent or countercurrent flow from which vapour is given off, is divided into superimposed stages 8a, 8b and 8c by separating plates 7, each stage containing a bundle of vertical tubes 10 arranged slightly below the centre of the stage and forcing ascent tubes 13 and a central tube 14, and with pipes 11 extending through the plates 7 coaxial with the tubes 13 through which gas or vapour passes upwardly and a down pipe 12 extending to beneath the liquid level in the shape below. The passing upwardly of the gas or vapour causes the liquid to rise up tubes 13 so effecting circulation whatever the overall direction of flow. Heating or cooling fluid may be passed around the tubes 13, 14. Complementary feed pipes and paddles may be provided for each shape. If the liquid contains pure solid particles e.g. of catalyst, which had to settle, funnel shaped down pipes are provided.

Abstract: Fluid fractionating apparatus and a unit for use therein, the unit being positionable in a jacket having at least one fluid inlet and at least one fluid outlet, the unit including at least one leakproof band wound up in the form of a spiral cylinder, the turns of which are radially spaced from one another. A multiplicity of hollow fibres are wound around the turns of the spiral cylinder and extend therebetween. Two end walls extend perpendicular to the axis of the spiral cylinder, and may be formed of a solidified glue, the walls being located one at each end of the cylinder and firmly fixed to the leakproof band of the hollow fibres, at least some of the fibres crossing right through at least one of the end walls and opening on the side thereof outside the spiral cylinder. An opening, which may be provided with a hollow mandrel extending into the interior of the innermost turn of the spiral, is used for feeding the fluid thereto or removing it therefrom.

Abstract: A multistage reactor including a vertical column divided into stages by horizontal separation plates. Each stage includes a bundle of vertical tubes, supported by upper and lower horizontal support plates, the tubes serving for the ascent and descent of liquid within such stage. The ascent tubes extend above the upper support plates by between 0.5 and 10 times their diameter. Through pipes in each separation plate, coaxial with the ascent tubes of the stage above, carry up-flowing gas or vapor and a down tube extends through each separation plate partially into the space above the upper support plate of the stage below.
