Harvested material, in particular fodder, is compressed into a compact state, the thus-compacted material is coiled by twisting, and the coiled material is then compression-moulded into diamensionally stable bodies. Fig. 2 shows one suitable apparatus, the fodder being compacted and fed to space 30 by auger 20, twisted by units 34 and compressed by the combined action of piston 32 and die cells 36. Fig. 5 shows another embodiment, the rams 34 being pushed forward by crankshaft 50 (or plate 88, Fig. 6, not shown), rotation being imparted by spiral guides 72. In other forms, the die cells may be arranged as an annulus, the compacting may be effected by travelling belts or rollers.

Abstract: Fodder is converted into shape-retaining blocks or cakes by an apparatus which collects fodder off the ground and subjects it to a preliminary compacting action, thereupon to a twisting action which results in the formation of ropes of convoluted material, and to final compacting action resulting in conversion of ropes into blocks or cakes of firmly compacted material. The twisting and final compacting actions can be carried out sequentially or simultaneously.
