Abstract: A process variable transmitter (10) includes an analog-to-digital (A/D) converter (22) that receives a sensor signal (20) provided by a sensor (18) that senses a process variable and converts the sensor signal (20) to a digital signal. A processor (24) receives the digital signal and provides a measurement output indicative of the digital signal. A noise detector (26) receives the sensor signal (20) and generates a first value indicative of a number of positive noise events relative to a positive threshold value and a second value indicative of a number of negative noise events relative to a negative threshold value. The processor (24) evaluates the noise count and generates a noise output, indicative of detected noise, based on the first and second values.

Measurement circuitry (36) is configured to measure a voltage across the RTD (32) and identify a degraded connection to the RTD and responsively measure a temperature of the process fluid using the electrical connections.

Abstract: A process variable transmitter (10) for measuring a temperature of a process includes a first, a second, third, and fourth terminal configured to couple to the temperature sensitive element (16, 18). Measurement circuitry measures an electrical parameter between a pair of the terminals. A microprocess (22) identifies a location of the temperature sensitive element (16, 18) coupled to at least two of the terminals based upon an electrical parameter measured by the measured circuitry between two terminals. In another configuration, the process variable transmitter measures temperature of a process using a thermocouple (18). A heating element (41) is configured to heat terminals coupled to the thermocouple (18). A microprocessor (22) determines polarity of the thermocoupled based upon a measured electrical parameter between the terminals in response to applied heat.
