Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electrical connector that protects the pressure sensor stem projecting from the pressure sensor capsule from breaking.
SOLUTION: The electrical connector 50 protects a pressure sensor stem that projects from a pressure sensor capsule. The electrical connector 50 comprises base a plate 52 that possesses a central hole 54, and surrounding walls 56 that are connected with the base plate 52 and overhung below the base plate 52. Surrounding walls 56 can be slidably engaged with the pressure sensor capsule, when the pressure sensor stem penetrates through the central hole 54 and it projects above the base plate 52. A protection wall 60, connected with the base plate 52, overhangs above the pressure sensor stem, so as to protect the pressure sensor stem. A lead frame 64 in the protection wall 60 provides electrical connection to the sensor contact pad on the pressure sensor stem.

Abstract: A modular probe (22, 90) that is used with a transmitter (20) for determining levels in a process material container (10), bins, pipes, using capacitance, micro impulse radar, or other types of signals, has a self contained pressure seal (26, 38, 46, 91, 92). The probe (22, 90) mounts to a connector (58, 98) that has an explosion proof barrier (74, 97) in a manner so that they can be separated and replaced without altering the barrier (74, 97). The transmitter (20) may be coupled and uncoupled from the connector (58, 98) after the probe (22, 90) is installed in a tank and the transmitter housing (78) can be removed and replaced, both without affecting the explosion proof portion of the assembly. An environmental seal (66, 100) between the probe (22, 90), and the connector (58, 98) may be replaced without removing the transmitter housing (78) from the connector (58, 98) so the explosion proof barrier (74, 97) for the transmitter housing (78) remains effective.

Electromagnetic radiation shielding is provided not only by the containment ring, but also by an EMI shielding O-ring mounted in a groove on a sealing end of the containment ring. A process environmental O-ring is carried by the process seal in an outer shoulder groove that is enclosed by the containment ring.

Abstract: A modular probe that is used for determining levels in a process material container, bins, pipes, using capacitance, micro impulse radar, or other types of signals, and which has a self contained pressure seal in the probe. The probe mounts to a connector that has an explosion proof barrier. The connector in turn supports a transmitter housing, which can be made explosion proof as well. The probe is coupled to the connector in a manner so that they can be easily separated and replaced without altering the explosion proof barrier. An independent seal on the probe itself permits the probe to be installed in a tank prior to the transmitter installation, and the transmitter may be uncoupled from the connector and replaced with a new transmitter without affecting the explosion proof portion of the assembly. The transmitter housing may also be removed or replaced from service without disassembly of the housing while the probe remains installed in a tank or other location undisturbed until the transmitter is replaced. Further, an environmental seal between the probe and the connector may be replaced without removing the transmitter housing from the connector so the explosion proof barrier for the transmitter housing remains effective.
