Abstract: 8903. Tedeschi, V., and Rossi, A. G. June 16. Relays, non - circuitclosing.-A relay of the dynamo-electric type for amplifying telephonic and like currents comprises interchangeable primary and secondary coils arranged symmetrically in ring formation with their axes parallel to the axis of the ring, the coils being brought into inductive relation with one another by the rotation of one or more copper or like disks. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the primary and secondary circuits I, II each include a pair of stationary coils surrounding laminated soft-iron cores a, b. The primary coils A, B are wound in opposite directions and are placed at opposite sides of the centre of a rotary copper disk R, and the similarly-wound secondary coils C, D are symmetrically placed 90 degrees from the primary coils. The number of primary and secondary coils may be increased, for example, the primary coils may be 90 degrees apart and separated by secondary coils, successive primary ooils or secondary coils being wound in opposite directions. In the multiple machine shown in Fig. 4, the primary and secondary coils are arranged between a series of parallel copper disks R, all mounted on and rotated by a central shaft. The sets of primary and secondary coils may be connected respectively in series, or the first set of secondary coils may be connected to the second set of primary coils, and so on; or mixed connexions may be made. In a modification, Fig. 7, a large number of coils A is used, the whole forming a stationary ring mounted between two copper annuli R secured to the rim of a wheel M of non-magnetic material. In Fig. 9, the primary coils I, wound alternately in opposite directions, are shown all on one side of the copper annulus R, and the secondary coils II are on the other side. The centre of each primary coil is midway between the centres of the adjacent secondary coils, and the cores of adjacent coils are bridged, to form horseshoe magnets a, b, &c.

Abstract: 23,628. Rossi, A. G. Oct. 15. Wave-detectors, with mirrors for direct recording, are constructed in accordance with the principle that a torsionally - strained magnetic wire vibrates under the action of periodic elec tric forces. A fine iron wire a, b carrying a small mirror s is subjected to adjustable ten sion and torsion by sup ports A, B and is surrounded by slotted copper tubes a, # or by coils a , # wound on glass tubes. Terminals are provided for the ends of the wire a, b and of the tubes a, #. According to one method, the wire a, b is connected between the antenna and earth, and the inner ends of the tubes a, # are connected to a capacity. Or an alternating potential may be given to the tubes a, # to produce resonant vibrations in the wire a, b, the amplitude of these vibrations being affected by electric oscillations in the wire. Or the wire a, b may be set in resonant vibration by passing an alternating current through it, the oscillations in the antenna being passed through the coils a , # to vary the amplitude, of the vibrations. The signals may be recorded photographically. Low-frequency tuning may be effected by correlating the wave-train frequency to the natural frequency of the wire.
