Abstract:
A volumetric pump for administering intravenous fluids to a patient comprises a housing having an elongate cavity therein with an open and a closed end. A resilient sheet of material having two branched portions which form a centrally-located aperture is disposed over the open end of the housing. A pump shaft is slidably disposed through the aperture such that one branched portion toward the cavity and the other branched portion extends away from the housing such that a sphincter seal is formed about the shaft. An inlet conduit leading from a fluid source such as an IV bag passes through the housing into the cavity near one end thereof, and an outlet conduit leading to a fluid sink such as a patient passes through the housing from the cavity near the other end thereof. The shaft is driven back and forth in reciprocating motion, inwardly and outwardly of the cavity, to alternately produce a positive pressure forcing fluid out of the outlet conduit to the fluid sink, and a negative pressure forcing fluid from the fluid source through the inlet conduit.
Abstract:
An individual person mobility simulator includes a base for placement on a support surface, a steering post extending upwardly from the base to terminate in an upper end, a seat mounted on the upper end of the steering post on which a human operator may sit, a torque/position sensor disposed between the seat and the steering post to sense changes in seat position caused by the operator, and foot stirrups into which the operator may place his feet, said foot stirrups being movably mounted on the steering post. A power source is provided to supply a resistive force to movement of the foot stirrups in response to and dependent upon resistance signals. A control unit supplies resistance signals to the power source to determine the amount of resistance to be applied to movement of the foot stirrups. The amount of resistance is geared to simulate the steepness of terrain over which the operator is moving, with greater resistance being applied when the terrain is uphill and less resistance being applied when the terrain is level or downhill, for example.

A teleoperation system includes a master station having an operable master link coupled to a master actuator which provides force resistance to operation and movement of the master link in response to command signals, and a slave station having a slave link moveable by a slave actuator in response to command signals. Also included is a control system for producing command signals in response to movement of the master link, where the control system includes apparatus for producing a signal representing position of the master link, apparatus for producing a signal representing force supplied to the master actuator by operation of the master link, apparatus for producing a signal representing force applied to the slave link by the slave actuator, apparatus for producing a signal representing position of a slave link, and a force control unit responsive to the master link position signal, the master actuator force signal, the slave actuator force signal, and the slave link position signal for producing a force command signal for supply to the slave actuator to cause the slave actuator to move the slave link in substantially faithful imitation of movement of the master link.
Abstract:
Displacement measuring apparatus for measuring the displacement and movement of an object includes an array of sensors having an operative surface and circuitry for producing an electrical output signal whose value is dependent upon the disposition of an electrical/magnetic field producing member along the sensor array. The field producing member is disposed to contact and slide over the operative surface as the object whose displacement is to be measured is moved. The value of the electrical output signal produced by the circuitry is thus dependent upon the position of the field producing member along the sensor array and thus by the position and movement of the object.

Abstract:
A servovalve apparatus for use in fluid systems which comprises a flexible fluid conduit (60) and a conductive coil which surrounds at least a portion of the conduit (60) adjacent its upstream end. An armature (64) is secured to the flexible conduit (60) so as to be adjacent the conductive coil. Two permanent magnets (72,73) preferably formed of a rare earth metal material, are provided adjacent the armature (64) on opposite sides thereof, the magnets (72,73) being positioned such that one magnet presents a north magnetic pole facing the armature (64) and the other magnet presents a south magnetic pole facing the armature (64). A receiving plate (80) is provided adjacent the downstream end of the flexible conduit (60), the receiving plate having one or more channels (84,86) formed therein for receiving fluid from the conduit (60). Preferably, the channels (84,86) in the receiving plate (80) originate within and communicate with a concave socket (82) in the receiving plate (80) which has substantially the same radius of curvature as the path over which the downstream end of the flexible conduit (60) moves during flexure.
Abstract:
Displacement measuring apparatus for measuring the displacement and movement of an object includes a sensor having an operative surface and circuitry for producing an electrical output signal whose value is dependent upon the area of the operative surface covered by a force-field producing member. The apparatus also includes a movable, force-field producing member which selectively covers and uncovers at least a portion of the operative surface as the object whose displacement is to be measured is moved. The value of the electrical output signal produced by the circuitry is thus dependent upon the area of the operative surface covered by the member and thus by the position and movement of the object.
Abstract:
Apparatus for non-planar treatment of a workpiece utilizing exposure beam lithography includes a vacuum chamber (4), an exposure beam generator such as an electron beam generator (8) disposed in the chamber for directing a beam (12) towards a work location (16), a chuck (44) disposed in the chamber for holding and positioning the workpiece (40) at the work location, a rotary motorized stage (48) disposed in the chamber and responsive to first control signals for selectively rotating the chuck, and thus the workpiece, to thereby expose different areas of the workpiece to the beam, and a linear motorized stage (56) disposed in the chamber on which the rotary stage is mounted, said linear motor being responsive to second control signals for selectively moving the rotary stage and thus the chuck and workpiece in a linear direction which is generally parallel with the axis of rotation of the rotary stage. The workpiece is thus exposed over additional areas by operation of the linear stage. A controller supplies first and second control signals to the rotary stage and linear stage respectively to selectively effect the operation thereof.
