Abstract:
A method and apparatus for descrambling a television signal using a three tier encryption technique for the code used to descramble the signal. At the transmitter, a distribution key (41) is used to encrypt a session key. The encrypted session key (40.1) is transmitted in the digital data channel (40) of the television signal. The session key is also used to encrypt the descramble code (40.2) which is also transmitted in the data channel (40) of the television signal. At the receiver (42) the encrypted session key (43) is decrypted using a distribution key (41). The decrypted session key (43), is in turn used to decrypt the descramble code (44). The descramble code may then be used to descramble and/or decrypt other signals (45, 46, 47) in the receiver.
Abstract:
In a FM television signal angle modulated with luminance and chrominance information, there exists a high degree of correlation between picture elements occurring one line period apart. In an effort to steer the pass band of a tunable bandpass filter (320) to the instantaneous frequency of the incoming television signal, a steering signal (340) is developed which utilizes this high degree of correlation. For NTSC systems, (Figure 3), luminance information is delayed by one-line period (63.5 mu s in the U.S.A.) and combined with suitably delayed chrominance information to form the filter's steering signal. For MAC systems (Figure 4), one-line delayed luminance and two-line delayed chrominance information are alternately applied to the filter as its steering signal. By steering the pass band of the filter to the incoming signal, maximum signal will be captured with minimum noise, enhancing the signal-to-noise ratio of a color television system.
Abstract:
A system for signal level control in AM fiber systems is provided. The system provides level controls at both transmitter and receiver ends of the fiber transmission system, utilizing compensation and control techniques at each end to maintain and optimize the performance of the system. The transmitter includes two stage level control based on a composite power level of a detected RF signal. The receiver includes two stage level control based on a pilot channel filtered from the channels transmitted to the receiver.
Abstract:
A multi-element antenna feed method and system which has superior side lobe characteristics over precious electronically scanned beam approaches is provided. A multi-element antenna feed system generally comprises a multi-element antenna, an antenna array processor, a receiver, a signal processor for automatic tracking of targets, and an antenna steering control mechanism. The multi-element antenna may comprise alternate configurations and the antenna array processor is coupled to the multi-element antenna. The antenna array processor particularly comprises a diode switching array for combining at least one output of the elements of the multi-element antenna with at least one other output of the multi-element antenna switchably selected via the diode switching array. The method allows control of the antenna system side lobes in both the scanned offset beam plane and the orthogonal plane by an amplitude weighted combination of the selected element beams. This results in an improved capability to reduce crosstalk between two orthogonal tracking channels, offset beam control versus frequency, and a wide frequency bandwidth.
Abstract:
The present invention discloses a method and apparatus for providing a cable TV system with the ability to issue information from a system manager (102), determine whether the information is intended for a set top designed to receive out-of-band information or in-band information, send the information to the appropriate circuitry. Reformatting of some information is necessary and is performed by a format translator (701). For in-band information, information may be sent over one or more of a plurality of data streams. Certain types of information are sent over one or more data streams based on the type of information and characteristics of the data streams. It is further disclosed that for efficiency, similar information intended for several addresses is grouped together in a database (702) manager so that the information may be sent to plural addresses at one time. Scramblers (104, 209) are employed with the capability of inserting data onto nonscrambled channels.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for creating a television signal and encrypting or decrypting the signal at the same time. Luminance and chrominance information are received by the apparatus and stored in separate television scan line stores (38a, 38b). The stored luminance and chrominance information is read out from their respective stores at a frequency corresponding to a desired format or standard to create the television signal. The signal may be simultaneously encrypted or decrypted by delaying the time at which the luminance and/or chrominance information is read out in accordance with an encryption or decryption key.
Abstract:
In an impulse pay-per-view system, downloadable transactions effect increased control and diversity. A preview time/free time transaction permits a subscriber to view portions of a pay-per-view event without purchasing the event. A security transaction sent while each event is active prevents a subscriber from receiving events which have not been purchased. A telephone number transaction includes a special character representing an instruction to pause between dialing selected digits. A viewer statistic transaction instructs a subscriber to record the channel he is viewing. A subscriber may pre-buy events to facilitate event recording. System manager (8) complies and downloads transactions to IPPV modules (20) via addressable transmitter (10) and CATV network (12). Modules (20) control set-top terminals (15) to control viewing of events. Modules (20) also report event viewing data to system manager (8) via telephone network (24) and phone processor (18).
Abstract:
In a Multiplexed Analog Component (MAC) color television transmission system in which the MAC signal is to be converted at the receiver to a composite color television signal having a 227.5 fH color subcarrier, frequency-generation equipment required at the receiver is simplified, and bandwidth is extended, by selecting the various frequencies in accordance with the following relationship: f0 = 3f1 = 3f2 = 2f4 = 1365k fH where f0 is the master clock frequency generated by a master clock (401), f1 is the luminance sampling frequency, and f2 is the chrominance sampling frequency generated by a frequency divider circuit (403); f4 is the MAC sampling frequency generated by a second frequency divider circuit (402), fH is the horizontal line frequency, and k is a positive integer greater than 2, f3 is the data clock frequency which is independent of k and remains fixed at its present value.
Abstract:
A secure communications system requires special arrangements for the establishment and maintenance of framing and synchronization. A framing word is transmitted (line 2) at a fixed frequency, and a key necessary to unscramble the transmission is transmitted (line 3) in a fixed position in relation to the framing word. Synchronization information (reference clock bursts) is scrambled with the intelligence and may only be recovered once the key is available. When framing is being maintained, the receiver's phase-locked loop (107) opens only during the short reference clock bursts in the incoming signal, and the framing signal generator (105) is able to predict the occurrence of successive framing signals without reference to the incoming signal. When framing is lost, the receiver enters a ''soft lock'' condition in which its phase-locked loop is opened to receive the entire incoming signal and in which the framing signal generator (105) refers solely to the incoming signal to generate framing signals.
