    Abstract: A compound of formula (I), wherein: R1 is H, alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, cycloalkyl, cycloalkylalkyl (all optionally substituted) or OR4; R2 is hydrogen; OR R1 and R2, located on two adjacent carbon atoms, form together with the carbon atoms that carry them an aryl group, or a 6-membered ring containing one or two oxygen atoms; X is O, S, C(H)q (q is 0, 1 or 2), SO, or SO2, OR X is a single bond when R1 and R2, located on two adjacent carbon atoms, form together with the carbon atoms that carry them an aryl group, or a 6-membered ring containing two oxygen atoms; Y is O, S, C(H)q (wherein q is equal to 0, 1 or 2), SO or SO2; R3 is hydrogen, aryl, arylalkyl or alkyl; n is equal to 0, 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5; when R1 and R2, located on two adjacent carbon atoms, form together with the carbon atoms that carry them an aryl group, or a 6-membered ring containing one or two oxygen atoms; OR n is equal to 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 when R1 is as defined as above and R2 is a hydrogen atom; The -(CH2)n- chain depicted in formula (I) is optionally substituted A is -NR5 R6 wherein R6 is H or alkyl, R5 is -C(=Z)(R7) wherein Z is O or S, and R7 is: H, alkyl, cycloalkyl, cycloalkylalkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, aryl, arylalkyl or R7 is NR8R9; OR A is -C(=Z)(NR8R9) With the provisos that: i) X and Y cannot simultaneously represent C(H)q (wherein q is equal to 0, 1 or 2); ii) When the compound of formula (I) is a 2,3-dihydrobenzodioxin compound (X and Y are both O, R1, R2 and R3 are all H and the dashed lines represent single bonds), the group -(CH2)n-A is not: -CH2-NHCORa (where Ra is ethyl, 3,4,5-trimethoxyphenyl, 2,6-dimethoxyphenylethyl, phenylethyl, benzyl, phenyl, chloromethyl or trifluoromethyl), -(CH2)2-NHCORb (where Rb is 2,3,4-trimethoxyphenyl), -CH2-CONHRc (where Rc is methyl, ethyl, n-butyl, 2-hydroxypropyl or 3-methoxypropyl), -(CH2)2-CONHRd (where Rd is methyl, 2-hydroxypropyl or 3-hydroxypropyl); iii) When the compound of formula (I) is a chroman compound (X is CH2, Y is O and R1, R2, R3 are as defined above and the dashed line represents single bonds, the group -(CH2)n-A is not: -CH2-NHCORe (where Re is a cycloalkyl group) in the 2-position of the chroman group, -CH2-CONHRf (where Rf is a benzyl or 1-phenyl-2-hydroxyethyl) in the 4-position of the chroman group. iv) When A is NHCSNHR8 and n is 2, R8 is not an aryl group; v) When X is CH2 and R2 is H, A is not a urea or a thiourea group vi) The compound of formula (I) is not a thiochroman group (X is CH2, Y is S and R2 is H) substituted in the 3-posiiton by a -CH2-C(=O)(NR8R9) chain. Melatoninergic pharmaceutical compositions comprising the compound of formula (I) are also described.
