Abstract:
Stable high internal phase water-in-oil emulsions containing polymerizable vinyl monomers, crosslinking monomers and initiators are obtained, useful in producing low density porous crosslinked polymeric materials by using a surfactant system containing (a) an anionic surfactant, the anionic surfactant having an oil soluble tail and an anionic functional group and (b) one or more quaternary salts having one or more hydrocarbon groups having greater than or equal to 8 carbon atoms. A water-in-oil emulsion can be formed with lower surfactant concentration than sorbitan fatty acid ester alone and improved surfactant performance at elevated temperatures is obtained.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus is provided for determining if a vehicle with an operating engine is at a particular location, the apparatus comprising: an antenna comprising a continous wire formed into at least one loop; and a means to determine when the antenna is exposed to an oscillating electromagnetic field having a frequency between about 700 and about 2100 Hz of a strength characteristicof a vehicle's alternator operating in the vicinity of the antenna. In a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the sensor of the present invention futher comprises a means to generate a signal when the antenna is exposed to the oscillating electromagnetic field having a frequeny between about 700 and about 2100 Hz of a strength characteristic of a vehicle's alternator operatingin the viciniy of the antenna, and the signal is used as an input into a logic system that requires that the signal not be generated in order for a refuelling system to refuel a vehicle in the vicinity of the antenna. The antenna is preferably a figure eight loop antenna placed in pavement below the location at which the vehicle is expected to be. The sensor of the present invention is particularly applicable as an input to disenable a fuel pump at a refuelling station.
Abstract:
This invention relates to a process in which a linear olefin is converted under isomerizing conditions to its corresponding methyl branched isoolefin by contact at a temperature of from 200 DEG C to 650 DEG C with an isomerizing catalyst comprising (i) at least one zeolite having only in one dimension a pore structure having a pore size small enough to retard by-product dimerization and coke formation and large enough to permit entry of the linear olefin and allow formation of the methyl branched isoolefin, (ii) an alumina binder and (iii) up to about 15 % by weight of coke oxidation-promoting metal. After a period of operation, when sufficient coke has deposited on the catalyst in an amount to significantly reduce the activity of the catalyst, the catalyst is stripped of hydrocarbon and then contacted at elevated temperature with an oxygen-containing gas for a sufficient time to burn off the coke, i.e. to regenerate the catalyst at a temperature of less than about 565 DEG C. After regeneration, the isomerization process is continued. The use of palladium and/or platinum as the coke oxidation-promoting metal is particularly desirable.

A polymer composition having improved balanced mechanical and optical properties comprising (1) a random copolymer comprising from about 0.8 % to about 20 % by weight of butene-1 and from about 80 % to about 99.2 % by weight of propylene, and (2) from about 0 %-0.35 % by weight of polymer composition of a synthetic amorphous silica antiblock agent.
Abstract:
Improved polymer compositions, useful in the manufacture of closures and as liners for reclosable container closures, comprising blends of semicrystalline poly(1-butene), ethylene-methylene acrylate, polypropylene random copolymer, wherein the polypropylene random copolymer and the ethylene methyl acrylate can be used singularly or in combination, a lubricating agent and optionally, low density polyethylene. The inventive polymer compositions are recyclable, and do not present the environmental, health, and odor problems associated with polymer liners known in the art.
Abstract:
The invention relates to a composition composed of fatty acid esters of hexitans (sorbitans) and non-esterified polyols, having a content of non-esterified polyols in the range of 6.59 wt. % to 0.05 wt. %, and to a process for purification by removing non-esterified polyols from a composition composed of fatty acid esters of hexitans and non-esterified polyols, which process comprises the steps of: a) dissolving said composition in a solution comprising at least one hydrocarbon and at least one polar organic solvent to produce an organic solution of said composition; b) mixing or contacting said organic solution with an aqueous solution of at least one metal salt under conditions effective to extract said non-esterified polyols; and c) separating said organic solution from the aqueous solution, optionally followed by the recovery of the purified fatty acid esters of hexitans.
Abstract:
A catalyst and process for the polymerization of cyclic olefins, such as dicyclopentadiene, are disclosed. The catalyst comprises the reaction product of a transition metal halide and a biphenol. Polymerization can be carried out in a reaction injection molding process to prepare a thermoset molded article.
Abstract:
A tubular coupling (10) adapted for connection by interference fit and adhesive bonding to a tubular member (12) is disclosed. The tubular coupling (10) includes a tapered section (30) adjacent the adhesive bonding area (18) to reduce the stress concentration in the layer at the point of contact with the composite tube (12). The interference fit (20, 14) is used to hold the composite tube (12) rigidly on the tubular coupling (10) while the adhesive cures. This allows the joint to be assembled quickly. The interference fit design provides means of adjustment to compensate for manufacturing tolerances.
