    Abstract: In order to satisfy both of high-sensitivity and low-sensitivity applications with no replacement of a flow cell, a photodetector (30) is divided into four portions (44-1, 44-2, 44-3, 44-4) by a first straight line (40) which is perpendicular to a direction of movement of a slit image (6) and a second straight line (42) which is inclined with respect to the direction of movement of the slit image (6) to intersect with the first straight line (40). Assuming that S1, S2, S3 and S4 represent intensity levels of detection signals of the photodetector portions respectively, the signals are processed along the following equations in analysis and preparative modes respectively: Sa=c{(S2+S3)-(S1+S4)}/{(S2+S3)+(S1+S4)]} Sp=c{(S1+S2)-(S3+S4)}/{(S1+S2)+(S3+S4)]}.

    Abstract: The objective of the present invention is to automate introduction or substitution of a mobile phase in a liquid chromatograph without increasing the cost. When a signal for filling up with or substituting a mobile phase is externally transmitted to a control part (40), the control part (40) switches a valve (26) for connecting a channel from a pump part (2) to a sampling needle (36) through a sampling loop (24) and moves the sampling needle (36) toward a drain port (38). Thus, a channel is formed through a mobile phase container (16) # a pump (10) # the switching valve (26) # the sampling loop (24) # the sampling needle (36) # the drain port (38). In this channel state, the control part (40) drives the pump (10) at a high speed for substituting the channel connecting the pump (10) and the sampling needle (36) by a desired mobile phase.

    Abstract: (A) a differential refractometer has a flow cell divided into two cells by a partition inclined w.r.t.the optical axis of a measuring beam, sample soln. and reference soln. being passed through or held in respective cells. The measuring beam passes through a slit and then the flow cell and is reflected by a mirror back through the flow cell to produce a slit image on a photodetector. The novelty is that (i) the photodetector is subdvided into four sections by a first straight line, perpendicular to the slit image movement direction, and a second straight line, which is inclined w.r.t. the slit image movement direction and which intersects the first straight line; and (ii) an operational device receives output signals from the sections in order to derive the difference between sections flanking the first straight line, with the slit image lying transverse to the first straight line, for high sensitivity detection, while the difference between outputs of sections flanking the second straight line, with the slit image lying transverse to the second straight line, is derived for low sensitivity detection. (B) Also claimed is a liq. chromatograph including the above differential refractometer. ADVANTAGE - The differential refractometer can be used for high sensitivity applications, e.g. analysis, and for low sensitivity applications, e.g. preparative uses, without the need for flow cell replacement.

A detector measures the sample separated in the column. The apparatus is operated by a control system. A drain port receives liquid discharged from the sample needle. The control system switches the valve to connect the feed to the sample needle via the sample loop and moves the needle over the drain port.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To analyze a sample with high sensitivity by using a spectrophotometer which uses a diffraction grating as a replica product and which is provided with a flow cell in a detection part. SOLUTION: An airtight space is formed on the surface side of a diffraction grating 10 by the surface of a grating holder 12, by a spacer 14 and by a transparent quartz plate 16, and an air layer is sealed up. The circumferential face excluding the surface of the grating holder 12 is covered with a heat insulating member 18. A heater 20 is heated by a temperature regulating circuit 24 on the basis of a signal from a temperature sensor 22, and the temperature of the diffraction grating 10 is kept constant. A space which contains a flow cell 30 and an inflow-liquid heat-insulating part 40 which guides a liquid to the flow cell 30 is covered with a heat-insulating material 34. A heater 36 is heated by the temperature regulating circuit 24 on the basis of a signal from a temperature sensor 38, and the temperature of the flow cell 30 and that of the inflow- liquid heat-insulating part 40 are kept constant. Thereby, the temperature of a mobile phase and that of a sample in a light irradiation position become constant.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To measure a wide range of refractive index automatically and with an improved reproducibility without changing the configuration of a refractometer greatly by allowing a slit image to be formed at a constant position on a light reception element constantly. CONSTITUTION:A parallel plane plate 7 for moving the position of the image of a slit 3 on a light reception element 6 is inserted onto a light path where light reflected transmitted through a flow cell 1 and is reflected by a mirror 5 moves toward the light reception element 6 and then the inclination for the flux of transmission light on a parallel plane plate 7 is changed by a motor 8, thus displacing the image of the slit 3 on the light reception element 6 in the direction of an arrow X. The light reception element 6 is divided into two parts in the direction of the arrow X and the output of segments 61 and 62 is sent to a control circuit 9. In the control circuit 9, the output difference between the segments 61 and 62 is obtained and a comparison means 92 compares it with a reference value and then the parallel plane surface 7 is driven so that the output is equal to 0. Then, the count value of a counter 94 when the output of the comparison means 92 is equal to 0 is sent to a data processing device 10, thus calculating the refractive index of the sample.
