Typically after casting, components often reveal low or no transverse grain boundary strength so that cracks can appear and decrease the yield rate. The invention relates to providing improved grain boundary strength to significantly improve transverse stress rupture strength and ductility of directionally solidified columnar grain castings. The heat treatment involves at least one addition, such as boron, to improve the grain boundary strength.
