    Abstract: Generating a colour image from a depth or disparity map DM1, DM2, the colour image being composed of a plurality of components or channels Y, U, V. The depth map is a greyscale or monochrome image and is divided into three sets of pixels which are each entered into one of the luminance or chrominance channels. In another aspect, a group 1, 2 of contiguous pixels of the depth map is transferred to the colour image by putting a first pixel in the luminance component and populating the chrominance channel with residual or difference values calculated from predicted or interpolated pixels. Alternatively sums and differences of the contiguous pixels can be used to populate the three components of the colour image. Preferably this method is used to encode two depth maps as a single colour image of the same size. Preferably, a video is generated using the tile format frame-packing format, wherein a colour image generated from a depth or disparity map is entered into the frame along with images relating to two stereoscopic views.
