Abstract: PCD inserts comprise a PCD body having multiple FG-PCD regions with decreasing diamond content moving from a body outer surface to a metallic substrate. The diamond content changes in gradient fashion by changing metal binder content. A region adjacent the outer surface comprises 5 to 20 percent by weight metal binder, and a region remote from the surface comprises 15 to 40 percent by weight metal binder. One or more transition regions are interposed between the PCD body and substrate. The transition region comprises PCD, binder metal, and a carbide, comprises a metal binder content less than that present in the PCD body region positioned next to it.

Abstract: Polycrystalline ultra-hard compact constructions comprise a polycrystalline ultra-hard compact 40 having a polycrystalline ultra-hard body 44 attached to a substrate 46. A support member 48 is attached to the compact by a braze material. The support member can have a one-piece construction including one or more support sections. The support member has a first section 50 extending axially along a wall surface of the compact, and extending circumferentially along a portion of the compact. The support member can include a second section 54 extending radially along a backside surface of the compact, and/or a third section 58 extending radially along a front side surface of the compact. The compact disposed in the support is in an axially compressed state.

Abstract: A compact construct 64 made of an ultra hard material 66 which is substantially free of catalyst material to increase the thermally stability in a region adjacent a working surface and formed from consolidated materials that are thermally stable at temperatures in excess of 750 {C, a metallic substrate 70, and an intermediate material layer 72 used as a barrier to stop migration of materials from the substrate 70 to the ultra hard material body 66. The construct 64 has the advantage of being substantially free of catalyst material at one location, and therefore more thermally stable, but can be brazed to a body at an alternative location on the substrate 70. The thermally stable ultra hard material 66, the intermediate material layer 72, and the substrate 70 are joined together by a high pressure/high temperature process to form a single construct. Additionally disclosed is a method of manufacture.

Abstract: An annular seal 62 comprises an elastomeric seal body 70 that is configured to fit within a seal cavity 64 of a rock bit. The seal 62 comprises a first seal surface 72 for providing a seal along a rotary cone surface formed between the seal body and cone 66, and a second seal surface 74 for providing a dynamic seal between the seal body and leg 68 of the rock bit. The annular seal 62 further comprises an extrusion prevention member 76 that is positioned adjacent a surface of the seal body 70 between the first 72 and second 74 surfaces. The extrusion prevention member 76 can be integral, partially-attached, or independent of the seal body 70. The extrusion prevention member 76 is formed from a material having a hardness that is greater than that of the seal body 70. The extrusion prevention member 76 is positioned along the seal body 70 at a location adjacent a groove 80, formed between opposed members of the rock bit to act a physical barrier to prevent the seal from being extruded therethrough.
