    Abstract: This invention relates to the polymerization of alpha -olefins and to catalysts and cocatalysts for that purpose wherein the polymerization is carried out in the presence of a catalyst comprising an organometallic compound of a metal of Groups Ia, IIa, IIb, IIIa, and IVa of the Periodic Table and a solid cocatalyst comprising the reaction product of a halogenating agent, an organic oxygenated compound of a divalent metal, and a derivative of a transition metal of Groups IVb, Vb, and VIb of the Periodic Table, the proportions of halogenating agent and organic oxygenated compound being that required to result in a reaction product thereof having an atomic ratio of halogen/divalent metal greater than 1. The invention also comprises the method of making the cocatalysts.

    Abstract: 1394378 Polymerisation catalyst SOLVAY & CIE 8 Dec 1972 [8 Dec 1971 1 June 1972] 56719/72 Heading BIE [Also in Division C3] A solid catayltic complex for the polmerisation of olefin is obtained by reaching (i) an oxygen-containing organic compound of a metal of Groups Ia, IIa, IIIb (including boron), IVb (including silicone), VIIa or VIII, (ii) an oxygen-containing organic compound of a metal of Groups IVa, Va, or VIa and (iii) an aluminium compound containing at least one aluminium-halogen bond. A mixture of compounds may be used as component (i) or (ii) 'the three components of the solid complexes may be reacted by mixing simultaneously, mixing (i) and (ii) and subsequently adding (iii), or by mixing (ii) and (iii) and subsequently adding (i). In the examples, ethylene is homopoly merised or copolymerised with propylene in the presence of organoaluminium compounds and of catalytic complexes obtained from (i) Mg(OC 2 H 5 ) 2 , KOC 2 H 5 , Ca(OC 2 H 5 ) 2 , Al(OC 3 H 7 ) 3 , Si(OC 4 H 9 ) 4 , Mn(OC 2 H 5 ) 2 , Fe(OC 2 H 5 ) 3 , Mg(OC 2 - H 5 ) 2 /Al(OC 2 H 5 ) 3 , Mg(OC 6 H 5 ) 2 , Mg(OOCH) 2 , Mg(OH)(OCH 3 ), Mg acetylacetonate, or Mg- (OC 2 H 5 ) 2 ,/Al(OC 4 H 9 ) 3 , (ii) Ti(O-n-C 4 H 9 ) 4 , Ti- (OC 9 H 19 ) 4 , VO(OC 8 H 17 ) 3 , Zr(OC 4 H 9 ) 4 , (C 4 H 9 O) 3 Ti-O-Ti.OC 4 H 9 ) 2 -O-Ti(OC 4 H 9 ) 3 , Ti(OC 4 H 9 ) 4 /Zr- (OC 4 H 9 ) 4 , or Ti(OC 2 H 5 ) 2 , and (iii) Al(C 2 H 5 )Cl 2 Al(C 2 H 5 ) 2 Cl or AlCl 3 .
