A video game machine supplies to a memory card device drivers read from outside, for performing data transmission and reception with an externally provided expansion device. The memory card holds these device drivers as a device driver data file. The memory card retrieves the device driver that corresponds to the expansion device that is connected to the video game machine, from the device driver data file in which is its held, and supplies it to the video game machine, and the video game machine stores that device driver.

An information processing apparatus obtains a first image and display timing information of the first image via a first channel, and a second image via a second channel different from the first channel. The information processing apparatus includes a main CPU for processing the obtained second image in accordance with the contents of the first image, and a CRTC for outputting the obtained first image, the processed second image and the display timing information to a predetermined display unit to display a combined image obtained by combining the first and second images on the display unit.

Data are sent and received between a video game machine as a data processing apparatus with no radio communication function and an external device with a radio communication function. A portable computer is removably connected to the video game machine which processes data. A communication application and a radio communication driver for enabling radio communications between the portable computer and the external device are supplied from the video game machine to the portable computer, and stored into a memory of the portable computer. The portable computer supplied with the communication application and the radio communication driver enables the video game machine and the external device to send and receive data therebetween via the portable computer.

An object of the present invention is to construct a data communication network system having as a component an entertainment system that includes an entertainment apparatus to which a portable information communication terminal is freely detachably attached. In the data communication network system in accordance with the present invention, the entertainment system transmits an identification number assigned to the portable information communication terminal and input data or a message to a computer system acting as a server over a bi-directional communication network. The computer system transmits a command, which is responsive to the identification number and the input data or message, to a computer system having a database over a link realized with a LAN. The computer system retrieves information, which is associated with the input data or message, from the database, and transmits (broadcasts) the information together with the identification number to the portable information communication terminal through the link realized with radiocommunication over a unidirectional communication network. A networked data processing system serving as an asynchronous message exchange system or an asynchronous data summation and results distribution system can be constructed.

A database communication network system has an entertainment system (12) comprising an entertainment apparatus (102) to which a portable information communication terminal (32) is detachably connected. An individual identification code (individual PDA ID) of the portable information communication terminal (32) and a service request are transmitted from the entertainment system (12) via a bidirectional communication network (16) to a computer system (20) having a server function. The computer system (20) transmits a command representing the individual PDA ID and the service reque st via a link (22) in the form of a LAN to a computer system (24) having a database. The computer system (24) searches a database to extract informatio n corresponding to a service request, and transmits (broadcasts) the extracted information together with the individual PDA ID via a wireless unidirectiona l communication network (28) and a link (30) to the portable information communication terminal (32). Only the portable information communication terminal (32) with the individual PDA ID is capable of reproducing the received data.
