Abstract: A spool 2 has printing paper 3 wound on it and a detection portion 2a on the spool, which allows detection of rotation of the spool. The detection portion may comprise a notch 2a on at least one end of the spool or a mark such as a bar code (51) formed on the inside of at least one end of the spool. There may be spigots 5, 6 which rotatably support the spool. There may be rotation detection means 7, which may form part of a spigot. The spigots may have shafts 5a, 6a and flanges 5b, 6b, and one of the spigots 5 may have a through-hole 5c. A portion 8a of a lever 8 is biassed through hole 5c with a spring 10. When the spool rotates, lever portion 8a comes into and out of contact with the notch 2a through hole 5c by pivoting about pin 9, which is detected by optical sensor 12 via lever portion 8b. A video printer may comprise such an arrangement, coupled with means for detecting whether the paper is almost completely consumed and displaying an alarm to indicate this. There may be a second alarm to indicate that rotation of the spool is not detected. There is also a method of determining the quantity of remaining printing paper on a spool and displaying an alarm if the paper is almost completely consumed.

Abstract: An image is formed by thermally transferring dyes of a thermal transfer sheet onto a print recording medium, and then a protection layer is formed on the formed image. The transport speed of the print recording medium in the event of thermal transferring the dyes onto the print recording medium is set higher than that in the event of thermal transferring the protection layer onto the print recording medium. Thereby, the amount of thermal energy for application in the event of protection layer formation is increased to be greater than that in the event of image formation. Thereby, occurrence of concave-convex portions formed on the printed surface in association with a density difference in the event of image formation is prevented, and concurrently, the surface pattern in the event of image protection layer formation is improved.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a roll-like printing paper, a video printer using such roll-like printing paper and a method of detecting a remaining quantity of a roll-like printing paper. More specifically, this invention relates to a roll-like printing paper in which a paper spool may include a detection portion for detecting a rotation of the paper spool and a rotation of the paper spool can be detected by this detection portion. Further, this invention relates to a video printer and a printing paper remaining quantity detection method in which the rotation of the paper spool of this roll-like printing paper may be detected and an alarm may be displayed if it is determined based on the detected paper spool rotation that the remaining quantity of the roll-like printing paper approaches to its end.
