Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a display which has a large screen, is light, and thin and has high-grade picture quality, and its manufacturing method. SOLUTION: The display is equipped with an ultraviolet emitter 3 which has a fine particle sintered substance where fine particles including the fine crystals of a semiconductor are joined together by sintered regions and emits an ultraviolet ray 400 nm in wavelength, a phosphor 6 which absorbs the ultraviolet ray emitted from the ultraviolet ray emitter 3 and emits a visible ray, a first electrode 4 and a second electrode 5 which are electrically connected to the ultraviolet emitter 3, and a controller which controls the voltage applied to the first electrode 4 and the second electrode 5. The ultraviolet phosphor 3 is used as an exciting energy source for the phosphor 6. When a current is injected into the ultraviolet emitter 3 through the first electrode 4 and the second electrode 5 by the controller, an ultraviolet ray is emitted from the ultraviolet ray emitter 3. This ultraviolet ray is absorbed in the phosphor 6, and a visible ray is emitted from the phosphor 6. Hereby, a image is displayed on the screen of the display.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a light emitting element which can easily be manufactured and operated, and to provide a manufacturing method. SOLUTION: A structure where a hole transportation layer 22 and a semiconductor light emitting layer 23 are sequentially laminated on a substrate 21 is provided. The hole transportation layer 22 is constituted of the nitride of a 3B group element, to which acceptor impunity is added. The semiconductor light emitting layer 23 is constituted of a fine grain sintered body. In the fine grain sintered body, fine grains including crystallite constituted of the oxide of ZnO are jointed by sintering, a grain boundary energy barrier among the fine grains is small and electron transportation property is given. Thus, it can easily be operated by the DC current of low voltage. The substrate 21 can arbitrarily be selected, an area is made to be large and cost can be reduced. Then, the minute control of the hole transportation layer, the crystal system of the semiconductor light emitting layer 23 and a lattice constant is not necessary and the element can easily be manufactured.

SOLUTION: Multiple first electrodes 3 arranged nearly in parallel to each other, an ultraviolet luminescent film 4, multiple second electrodes 5 arranged nearly in parallel to each other and nearly perpendicularly to the first electrodes 3, and phosphors 6 are laminated in this order on a transparent substrate 2. The first electrode 3 and the ultraviolet luminescent film 4 form an ultraviolet luminous EL element 7. The controller of this image display device controls the electric field applied between the first electrodes 3 and the second electrodes 5. When the electric field is applied between the first electrodes 3 and the second electrodes 5, the ultraviolet luminous EL elements 7 emit ultraviolet light with the wavelength 400 nm or below. The phosphors 6 wavelength-convert the ultraviolet light into visible light and emit it in the incidence direction of the ultraviolet light.

The first electrode 4, the ultraviolet luminescent film 5 and the second electrode 6 form an ultraviolet luminous EL element 7. The controller of this image display device controls the electric field applied between the first electrodes 4 and the second electrodes 6. When the electric field is applied between the first electrodes 4 and the second electrodes 6, the ultraviolet EL elements 7 emit ultraviolet light with the wavelength 400 nm or below. The phosphors 3 wavelength-convert the ultraviolet light into visible light and emit it in the opposite direction to the incidence direction of the ultraviolet light.

The ultraviolet emission film 4 radiates an electromagnetic wave having a wavelength 400 nm or shorter by applying electric field to the pair of conductive films 3, 5. Since the nitride of a group 3B element used for the ultraviolet emission film as a base material is a chemically stable compound, the element is not deteriorated by the moisture or carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, even under a strong electric field or exposure to an ultraviolet-ray and can hence maintain stable luminance over a long time.
