Abstract: The apparatus, suitable for editing video tapes, includes a video playback unit (38), a video recording unit (39) having recording circuitry (50) for recording a video output signal from the video playback unit (38) as well as reproducing circuitry (51) for reproducing a video signal, and a sub-picture signal former (55) responsive to a video signal supplied thereto for providing a sub-picture signal to be displayed as a sub-picture insert of a main picture on a monitor (13). A switch (63) couples either the video output from the video playback unit (38) or the video output from the reproducing circuitry (51) included in the video recording unit (39) to the sub-picture signal former (55). The video signal which is not coupled to the sub-picture signal former (55) constitutes the main picture signal, and the sub-picture and main picture signals are combined in a combining circuit (53) to form a display signal which, when displayed, produces a main picture with a sub-picture insert. A common housing (4) may contain the video playback and video recording units (38, 39), the sub-picture signal former (55), the switch (63) and the sub-picture/main picture signal combining circuit (53).

A common housing contains the video playback and video recording units, the sub-picture signal former, the switch and the sub-picture/ main picture signal combining circuit.
