    Abstract: There is obtained a disk cartridge apparatus in which when a plurality of disk cartridges which are different in size and thickness are loaded on a drive device, the heights of respective switch detection surfaces of disk cartridges can be horizontally aligned with a mode detection switch of the drive device. A disk cartridge apparatus comprises disk cartridges (1) (12) stored within cartridge housings different in size and thickness in which disks having different diameters are stored, mis-erase prevention plugs (44) (49) including mis-erase prevention detection holes (45) (50) having switch detection surfaces (46) (51) on the disk cartridges (1) (12), a cassette compartment (23) including a recording and reproducing portion for loading the disk cartridge (1) (12) to record and/or reproduce the disk, a detection switch (47) (52) disposed on the cassette compartment (23) to detect the mis-erase prevention detection holes (45) (50) and a position reference portion for determining the positions and heights of the disk cartridges on the cassette compartment (23), wherein when the disk cartridge (1) (12) is loaded on the cassette compartment (23), the heights of the respective switch detection surfaces (46) (51) of the disk cartridges can be horizontally aligned with the detection switches (47) (52).

    Abstract: An optical recording medium is provided which has a substrate and a signal recording layer provided on the substrate and in which an information signal is recorded in the form of microscopic pits. A light beam is focused on the signal recording layer and some change of the light beam carried by a return light from the signal recording layer is detected to read the information signal recorded on the signal recording layer. The optical recording medium has a diameter of 65 mm or less and a thickness of 0.4 to 0.7 mm. An information signal recording area extends outwardly from a radial position of 12.5 mm or less from the center of the medium. The ratio in area between the information signal recording area and non-signal recording area is 3.4 or more. The storage capacity of this medium is 2 gigabytes or more. The optical recording medium has formed at the center thereof a center hole around which an annular table-abutment convexing to one side of the medium is formed. A magnetic-clamping hub is installed in the center hole and thus the medium is magnetically clamped to a rotation driving mechanism of an optical recording and/or reproducing apparatus. The compactness and high density of recording of the optical recording medium will contribute greatly to a further compact structure of a recording and/or reproducing apparatus in which the medium is to be used.

    Abstract: There are obtained a disk cartridge apparatus and a disk cartridge in which a disk cartridge having a different format is made unable to be inserted into a drive apparatus from a mechanism standpoint so that a user can instantly recognize that the disk cartridge having the different format has been inserted into the drive apparatus by mistake. A disk cartridge apparatus and a disk cartridge include a first disk cartridge and a second disk cartridge having cartridge housings of the same shape to store therein disks of the system that can be recorded and read by light of red laser beams and light of blue laser beams. When the first disk cartridge is inserted into a first drive apparatus 19, a discriminating groove of the first disk cartridge becomes identical to a discriminating convex portion 20 of the first drive apparatus 19 to enable the first disk cartridge to be loaded on the first drive apparatus. When a disk cartridge 21 of a different kind is inserted into the first drive apparatus 19, the discriminating convex portion 20 and a discriminating groove 24 of the disk cartridge 21 of different kind become nonidentical to each other to inhibit the disk cartridge of the different kind from being loaded on the first drive apparatus.
