    Abstract: A data reproducing apparatus enables special reproduction, such as backward reproduction, to be run quickly when specified. The apparatus comprises demodulating means (3) for demodulating data read from a digital video disk (1) by a pickup (2), storage means (4) for temporarily storing the demodulated data, a decoder (5) for decoding data read out of the storage means into original video signals, and a control circuit (8) for controlling the storage means (4) so that an unread data area and an already-read data area in the storage means take up about half of a total memory capacity, respectively, so that data necessary for reverse reproduction or the like is left in the storage means, thus allowing the special reproduction to be run quickly.

    Abstract: There is provided a method and apparatus for reproducing data which allow a reduction in the time required for recovery from the occurrence of an error. In a method and apparatus for reproducing data wherein data read from a disc is demodulated and written in a memory and data read from the memory is decoded to reproduce the original data by employing an arrangement wherein data is recorded in the disc on a sector basis; sector information associated with the sectors of demodulated data is detected; and writing and reading operations on the memory means are controlled based on the detected information. Control over the memory and distribution of data is performed on the basis of units (sectors) for data access to a disc. Therefore, even if the synchronization of data at the distribution device and decoder is disturbed, the synchronization on a sector basis can be recovered.

    Abstract: Data decoding apparatus decodes data reproduced from a record medium (1) and stored in a memory (7). Since decoding requires a sufficient amount of data to be stored in memory, especially when the data is, for example, predictively encoded, a system controller (21) inhibits previously read data from being overwritten in the memory (7). Thus, when a reverse reproduction operation is suddenly initiated during a forward reproduction operation, a sufficient amount of data is reserved in the memory (7) for decoding the data in the reverse direction. Similarly, the system controller (21) inhibits the memory (7) from writing over previously read data during reverse reproduction and a sufficient amount of data is reserved for decoding when forward reproduction is resumed.

    Abstract: In step S1, the capacity of the area (remaining quantity) of a disk in which information can be recorded is read, and the remaining quantity is displayed in step S2. After a user input the recording time of information to be recorded and the recording capacity w for the recording, an average transmission rate R1 is calculated from expression R1 = w/t - alpha in step S4. The rate alpha is the transmission rate for transmitting signals other than a video signal, such as an audio signal, attached to the video signal. Data obtained by applying a DCT treatment to the video data is quantized with a quantization width corresponding to the average transmission rate R1 and this data is intermittently recorded on the disk.

    Abstract: Data decoding decodes data reproduced from a record medium and stored in a memory.
