Abstract: A decoding apparatus, comprising: a volatile memory; a non-volatile memory for storing a compressed program; a decoder for decoding data; and a controller for controlling said decoder; wherein the decoding apparatus is arranged such that at the time of switching on said decoding apparatus, said controller reads out said compressed program from said non-volatile memory, decompresses the compressed program, stores the decompressed program into said volatile memory and controls said decoder in accordance with the stored decompressed program.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To add an extending function program at a low cost. SOLUTION: In this data reception processor, a branched step to an extending function program is provided in advance to a basic program stored, in a ROM 7 of a digital television broadcasting decoder. A program is described to the branched step, in a way such that entries t1-t3 of an EEPROM 9 are referred to, the program statement jumps to an address described in them, and the extending function program written in the jumped address is executed. The extending function program is transmitted as required by being stored in the EEPROM 9 for addition of a new extension function.
