Abstract: An edit mode controller for use in editing magnetic tapes using multiple video tape recorders, in which when one of the recorders is placed in a still or pause mode while waiting for the dubbing location on the other tape to be found, prevents damage to the tape by the repeated scanning of the head in the pause mode by detecting the elapse of a predetermined time period and incrementally advacing the tape by a few number of tracks, then placing the recorder back into the pause mode. The control pulses normally found on video tapes are used to both advance the tape the desired increment and also to rewind the tape back to the desired starting point, once the dubbing point on the other tape has been found.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To prevent deterioration in a magnetic recording medium due to a still by performing the step travelling of a magnetic head at every prescribed time, and evading a long time scanning on the same position. CONSTITUTION:VTRs 11 and 21 perform a recording or a reproduction by the scanning with rotary magnetic heads 12a, 12b, 22a, and 22b on video tapes 1 and 2. Control signals (CTL) on control tracks reproduced with fixed magnetic heads 13 and 23 are waveform-arranged at CTL circuits 14 and 24. After a still command signal is supplied from a system controller 4 to microprocessors 16 and 26 through command signal formation circuits 5 and 6, and when a state as it is is continued for six minutes, the microprocessors 16 and 26 control the travellings of the video tapes 1 and 2 through capstan motors 18 and 28, and the tapes are permitted to travel until a counter 25 counts the CTL signal for four times, and still states are generated at the position where the tapes advance by four tracks.
