Abstract: A thermal printer (1) includes a chassis (3) , a thermal head (16) secured to the chassis and a platen roller (30) which is rotatably supported in the chassis and movable relative to the thermal head. The platen roller is rotated by a first platen driving mechanism (50, 53-58), while being moved toward and away from the thermal head by second platen driving mechanism (30). When the platen roller is moved to contact with the thermal head via an ink ribbon intervened therebetween, a data or image is printed on a printing medium fed between the platen roller and the ink ribbon.

Abstract: The ribbon cartridge (1) comprises a substantially cylindrical cartridge body comprised of upper and lower casing halves (20,10). A ribbon supply reel (30) is rotatably housed in the cartridge body and has an ink ribbon (40) wound therearound. A pull sheet (41) is affixed to a leading edge of the ink ribbon, and includes an opening (41a) allowing easy chucking of the ribbon cartridge in a printer. Also provided on the pull sheet are cut-out portions (41b) so arranged as to prevent creasing of the ink ribbon during use. When the ink ribbon has been completely used, the used ribbon is retracted back into the cartridge for easy removal from the printer.

Abstract: The photographic paper (210) is intended for use with a printer with which a vaporisable dye from the latter is absorbed on a receptor layer (211) provided as an upper layer of a photographic paper base. A light absorbing layer (212) formed by a light absorbing agent is provided between the photographic paper base and the receptor layer. The light absorbing can be whitened in colour hue by thermal defraction either of the light absorbing agent itself by a light radiating element of the associated printer, or of a capsule enclosing a whitening agent mixed with the light absorbing layer.

Abstract: The printer (1) includes dye tanks (11) for accommodating solid powder form sublimating dyes. The dye tanks are communicated with liquid dye vaporizing sections (17) via respective accommodating passages (15) capillary tubes provided with heating elements (16) for liquefying dyes introduced from the dye tanks. The heating elements may also be active to heat the surface of photographic paper (50) via a protective layer (13) of the head portion (10) of the printer. A vibrating element (25) may be disposed in the capillary tubes for allowing liquid dye to be provided to the vaporizing sections. Each of the vaporizing sections comprises a plurality of vaporizing pores (17a) having a light-heat converting element projected there into from a head base of the printer. A laser source (18) is mounted over the light-heat converting element, which may comprise a heat resistant, light transmitting portion having a light-heat converting layer (20) disposed on a lower end thereof. The vaporizing pores allow a sufficient amount of liquid dye to be adhered to the lower side of the light-heat converting element to be vaporized and adhered to the surface of photographic papier upon irradiation by a laser beam from the laser source.

Abstract: An ink sheet (3) is wound around rollers (6), and a recording sheet (4) is placed with a space (d) between the ink sheet (3) and the recording sheet (4) and is advanced. The thickness of the space (d) is a value in the range of 1 to 100 mu m. The ink sheet (3) is irradiated with a laser beam (L) emitted by a laser (5) to transfer the dye contained in a dye layer formed on the ink sheet (3) from the ink sheet (3) to the recording sheet (4) for printing. The dye layer of the ink sheet (3) is replenished with the dye (30, 30A) heated and fused by a heater (9) by a dye supply unit (7) at a position other than a position where the ink sheet (3) is irradiated with the laser beam (L). Since the ink sheet and the recording sheet are held with the space (d) having a thickness in the range of 1 to 100 mu m, the dye once transferred to the recording sheet is not transferred from the rcording sheet to the ink sheet, so that a clear picture having a comparatively high density can be printed. Since the dye layer of the ink sheet is replenished with the dye, the ink sheet can be repeatedly used, so that no waste is produced.
