    Abstract: PURPOSE:To attain small size, by taking a tape pattern the same as the tape pattern of a conventional VTR by means of a small diameter of rotary drum, through the selection of the winding angle of a tape of a magentic recroder to the rotary drum and the diameter of the drum to a prescribed value. CONSTITUTION:A winding angle alpha of a magnetic tape 2 wound on a rotary drum 3 of a magnetic recorder is selected to the angle satisfying the conditions of EquationI, and the diameter of the drum 3 is selected from Equation II for a tape running speed V, a track length l'N, a vertical synchronizing frequency fv and a recording angle theta0. Taking a diameter of drum having larger diameter than D2 of the drum 3 as D1 and a still angle of the tape 2 to the drum as theta1, a still angle theta2 of the tape 2 to the drum 3 is selected by Equation III, and a horizontal scanning frequency fH' is selected as fH'=360 deg./alpha deg.XfH (where; fH is the standard horizontal scanning frequency of the NTSC or PAL system). The tape pattern of the drum of small diameter is taken as tape pattern of a normal VTR.
